Do I need to see Sinister (1) before I catch this one?

Yes, you need to see the first film. This one probably won't make any sense if you don't.
Plus, at least 9 out of 10 people who see both will tell you the first one is the better film.

I would recommend that you do so that you get a deeper sense of the build up for part 2, but this film isn't too bad by itself. You will miss the impact and significance of a few scenes and references but...it wouldn't be completely confusing if you saw it alone.
shareI kind of beg to differ. I would have been lost regarding who the Oswalt family is or Bughuul, the idea behind moving houses and back, etc.
Plus, the first one really does dig deeper into the mystery. If you see the first one afterward, there is zero mystery surrounding any of it.

Exposition is not the same thing as imagery or first-hand experience. I know they were explained away, but as I said I would have been lost with it. Not that I couldn't piece things together, but I would not have painted the same portrait on the canvas as Scott Derrickson did for S1.
Not to mention... the first one is better anyway. No reason not to see it first.

YES!! I think you really should catch the first one before you see this one. One of the main characters from the first film also appears in this one, and they make many references to characters and events from the first film.
I actually wished I had re-watched sinister before seeing number 2, I had first seen it when it was at the cinema and hadn't watched it since and so I couldn't really remember who was who or how it ended. I could still enjoy Sinister 2 as it does have its own individual storyline, and is entertaining on its own, but I was getting a tad confused every time they talked about something concerning sinister 1
:)
I recommend watching the first film and then just skipping this one altogether.
shareDefinitely. Unless the OP loves lame jump scares.
