This is the worst movie...

I have ever seen. Cliffhanger was better.

reply

woa woa! Cliffhanger it's horrible in every aspect, it even has a Razzie nomination for worst picture, please don't compare it to Everest.

True, while Cliffhanger is a freaking classic and by all accounts a fun movie, this was quite lackluster showing a bunch of dumasses dying.

reply

haven't seen Cliffhanger but yes agree, this movie was dreadfully boring.

Why is it that people think movies about mountaineering are supposed to be non stop action? Climbing isn't like that one bit and it's wrong to make it seem like it is.

"Nothing is more ill bred than trying to steal the affections of someone else's dog."

reply

I didn't expect non-stop action, at least some suspense. And personally i didn't experience any suspense while watching this.

reply

Sorry but climbing isn't about suspense either. It's more like this: climb, climb, climb, something happens out of the blue (meringue collapses and hurls you off the mountain, you slip and fall off the mountain, avalanche comes barreling down the corridor and buries you, ground opens beneath you and you fall into a crevice), then climb some more...if you survive the something that happens out of the blue.

Apart from the effects of oxygen deprivation there are no warnings, or at the most very little warning, when something happens on a mountain. As a result suspense just doesn't come into play. That's Hollywood stuff.

"Nothing is more ill bred than trying to steal the affections of someone else's dog."

reply

Well honestly I don't care exactly how the real thing plays out I'm watching a movie here. Playing golf or chess isn't particularly suspenseful either and I have seen good movies about both.

reply

it is about real life - people died - you are a jerk

reply

They died voluntarily, though. They chose this as a "hobby" and it killed them. They weren't climbing to find a cure for cancer.
It's like race car drivers--if someone gets killed in car crash on the racetrack, it's a horrible tragedy, but, not...unexpected.

Oh yeah, like when that retard Earnhardt butt *beep* the wall at Daytona at 120 MPH! That should happen to everyone who gets paid millions of dollars to make left hand turns!

Scootergirl, I agree (also, your signature line is so cute)

Anyway - to me this movie was really well done - realistically as possible.

Not sure why anyone would think it was even bad, much less 'worst' movie ever . . .

btw - I saw Cliff Hanger years ago ... for a little 'sheer' suspense and backstory romance thing it was ok - back then - today it seems really cheesy.

Regardless - it's a completely different genre of movie and can't even begin to be compared to Everest.

I read your comments on "Everest" and after watching it halfway thru I agree that this telling is pretty awful. Someone might have told you, but a much better telling of this same story (including excellent suspense) was the 1997 TV movie Into Thin Air: Death on Everest. For me Nathaniel Parker does a much, much better job of portraying Rob Hall than Jason Clarke ever does. The 97 film does have narration, but I think it helps to explain things much better & its not the documentary type narration either. Hope this helps :)

i guess you should watch more movies then.

reply

Comparing this to Cliffhanger is like comparing Appollo 13 to Gravity! It's not a fair or equal comparison in the least on account of the fact that you're talking about 2 very different films. One is bound by true events, the other is not, thus giving it way more creative freedom.

reply

Also, Cliffhanger is nothing more than a thoroughly entertaining action flick....if anyone thinks it's supposed to be more than that, then they have some serious problems and should probably get their head examined.

reply

climbing mount everest would be less boring than this rubbish

reply

I absolutely loved this movie from start to finish. Jason Clarke's portrayal of Rob Hall was excellent. I have watched it quite a few times and never tire of it. Tragic story.

reply

wow you must be a robot, i couldn't go through the first 15 minutes, i was frozen with boredom

reply

Seriously? Why watch a movie with no knowledge? This movie is for people who admires mountains. Not for people who look sexy chicks. Neither for people who want a muscular hero bashing villains on top of a mountain. Dude., go watch fiction. Funny people. :-D

reply

I cannot believe the majority of people involved in the making of this film did it for 'people who admire mountains'. That doesn't sound like a recipe for commercial success.

The problem with watching movies at home is it's too easy to turn off; walking out of a cinema demands a little more determination. I almost switched this off in the first five minutes after the pregnant woman with the vomit inducing 'be back in time for the birth' routine. I don't think it succeeds on any level, although points for trying.

reply

This caliber of climbing isn't your Sunday hike in the woods; properly conveying the complexity of the situation takes more than 15 minutes of screen time. It does actually require an attention span of more than 30 seconds.

There's someone in my head but it's not me.

reply

Me too! I am on my third watch and also finishing up Anatoli Boukreev's book (which is fantastic). After reading that book and Into Thin Air, I think all of the actors did a fantastic job portraying the real people.

You never know when you may have to jam

reply

I agree, Boukreev's book is a good read. I liked Into Thin Air, but I didn't think his treatment of Boukreev was entirely fair. My only issue with the movie is I'm not sure if you could follow some of what was happening if you weren't already familiar with the story, particularly when the story shifted from Rob and Scott. I'm certainly not agreeing with the Cliffhanger comment (someone is trolling us, surely), but I could see getting a little confused and bored during the last third. There were so many characters who got minimal introductions prior to the disaster, and their faces were often obscured.

Yep, I agree on every point.

reply

I enjoy watching action movies were terrorist are trying to kill Rocky Balboa for some reason. But this is not even close to the worst movie ever.

reply

Agreed. Cliffhanger was fun and suspenseful and people didn't just lay down to die.
