#1 - WTF do those damn Inuit subtitles say???? Whoever picked the size and font of those subtitles needs to be fired and they need to re-edit them so that normal people can read them. I even get up close to the tv and still can only make out ever 3rd word or so!! Am I the only one who has a hard time reading them or what??

#2 - So if they're supposed to be stranded in the Arctic, then where the hell is the water vapor/steam that's supposed to be coming out of their mouths when they breath and talk?? It's definitely not warm there, or else they wouldn't be stuck in ice. Who's idea was it to leave that aspect of the cold out of the story?? I mean, if you want us to "think cold" then we need to see breath. I mean, was the budget so tight that they had to cut "CGI steam" out of the script?! Was it an artistic decision?? Well if so, it was a bad decision. I just don't get it. It would make their situation so much more dire looking if it looked like they were actually cold where they're at.

2 very annoying things that bring this show down a point or 2 for me.

I don’t have any subtitles available and I’m not British so there are times I can’t understand a damn word. I usually put subtitles on everything if it’s an option.

The lack of cold breath didn’t bother me. I recall in Band Of Brothers they digitally added in the cold breath during the Bastogne episodes. It seemed cool at the time but the effect has not aged well. Perhaps I only noticed it because I knew about the cg edit.

There are subtitles in every episode in the scenes when they speak to Lady Silence and when other Inuits speak as well. They are so tiny you probably missed the damn things. They are seriously ant sized!!

Yes I saw those they aren’t what I was referring to. English subtitles is what I usually use you can absorb the script much better.

I do the same thing on nearly anything that's going to be difficult to catch, subtitles are the best for this. It helps me pick up on things too. For instance, I never knew the British used a different spelling for Eskimo (they use Eskimau).

And so the question remains... We're you able to clearly read the subtitles for the Inuit language scenes??

Yes I did not have an issue with the Inuit subtitles.

I don't have a problem reading the Eskimo subs, and my vision is only about 20/40, 20/60. I do have a 60" TV, though, so that may help :)

What I DO have a problem with is understanding what the hell most of these actors are SPEAKING, because almost every time I watch a film or TV show made with UK actors, I can never comprehend what the hell they're saying (unless they happen to be upper class characters and are speaking proper English). So I've been watching this show the whole time with sub-titles turned on.

Same for me. Except for the captains and Goodsir, was really hard to understand anything without subtitles

Gave up on it a while ago. Too slowly paced. Nice to see the highlights on YouTube.

You gave up on it too soon. It's a slow start, but it picks up in intensity. Maybe try a binge?

I agree. Give it another shot. I know it's sort of slow in the setup but it gets very good and I think the writing is excellent.

just looked on Wikipedia. in the spring/summer months, the period when most of the off boat events happen, the temperature can reach 50 degrees. I assume that is why most of the men where walking around without jackets. I can't recall if the earlier episodes, events occurring in the winter, had the water vapor/steam.

The series spans 2 years and never did I see breath steam. Whether they were in the ship, on the ship's deck, walking on ice, or walking on land. Even when Hickey was naked and shivering in only his skivvies being stabby stabby was there any visible vapor. And it was indeed very cold because the Inuits they came upon that day were very, VERY thick with animal skins. And my post encompassed the whole 2 year span, not just the latter off boat days. It's a very glaring misstep for me to not show how genuinely cold it was.

Good points, April.

I learned this from the movie "The Mountain Between Us" that if you can survive in the cold environment long enough, then your body will adjust to the cold and you won't feel the chilling anymore. Not sure how much real of that. What I can imagine is, if there are heavy breath steam in every scenes, then the show might appear to become a marijuana party. LOL.

Hate to be that guy (actually I don't hate it, I love it) but it isn't "steam/vapor", it's actually the opposite

We normally release water vapor when we exhale, but in very cold climate the water condenses and becomes liquid droplets, which is why it is visible to the naked eye. So it's condensation

Same reason why you get water drops forming around a really cold glass or bottle or why you get water around your home and car windows

Hehe, well I can't add much since I have never seen the show. I just wander into random boards to see if I can drop random facts about the phases of water

And thanks! I don't think many people get the reference, because even though it was a popular movie back in the day, cyberbob was a pretty minor character

Well... CyberBob was actually a pretty big part of that movie. Especially for never having any actual visual screentime. He's a pretty unforgettable "character" to anyone who's a real fan of that movie.

Oh and I recommend watching this miniseries. It was pretty damned good!!

The lack of steam whatever was a really immersion killer for me. It wouldn't be that big of a deal but in a show about the arctic? Come one, it felt like they were stuck in whatever part of the world during winter.

I completed the entire season and enjoyed it but hated the lack of steam.
