Dead Silence

Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely love Melissa McCarthy. Her films aren't always great, but I think she is hilarious and I love her personality in interviews. However, I went to see this film last night in a near full theater and it was dead silent throughout almost every single joke. There were moderate chuckles here and there, but never once did an eruption of laughter happen in the theater. It was extremely awkward throughout the experience. Toward the middle half of the film people started to get up and leave. I will say that in the history of me seeing movies I've only left a film once, and that was during 10,000 BC. I did end up leaving and getting my money back. They didn't even kind of question giving me a refund. I wouldn't have put up a fight for it, but I didn't seem to be the first one asking for a refund. The reason I'm writing this is to say if you think you should see this film just wait til the Bluray.

The only problem I have with your post (and the way I interpret the "oh , grow up" post) is that you asked for your money back after watching half of the movie. I don't care how bad a movie is. If you sit through all of it, half of it or only fifteen minutes, don't asking for you money back because you didn't like it. That to me is childish. It's like wearing an article of clothing for half the day (and sweating in it, creating creases in the fabric or washing it) and then returning it to the store for a refund. Girl, you already wore the item/saw the movie, you don't get your money back after that fact.

reply

I didn't beg for the money back. I asked them what their guidelines for customer complaints for films were. They said usually within the first 30 minutes they'll give the money back. Then they explained that they'd go ahead and give me my money back because so many people have walked out of the film. If you think it's childish that's fine, but don't think for a second I had to play the "let me speak to your manager" card. It was offered up to me with no pushback.

Same experience with friends and relatives that saw this film as well.

Apparently, they had stayed for the entire duration, but not a single soul in their theaters even laughed. They also mentioned to me that the Rotten Tomatoes score is pretty accurate (19% as of right now).

I'm in no means a Melissa McCarthy fan (didn't care for Mike & Molly (2010)). If it's as bad as they say it is, then I'll take their word for it. She should stick with her old pal Paul Feig. Her husband obviously cannot direct/produce/write a good movie.

BTW, the only movie I ever walked out on was Cloverfield (2008), but that was due to motion sickness.

reply

You know what, I can see that with Cloverfield. Personally, I loved that film, but I do understand why someone could get motion sick. Really the only part where I remember people getting a good laugh was the couch gag. Melissa is always at her best with physical humor.

reply

Melissa and Paul Feig? That's like adding gasoline to the fire.

reply

Not in my theatre. I mean I was dead silent most of the time, but others weren't really. Some jokes didn't get a laugh, but about half of the attempted jokes got laughs. They were just improvising and trying to come up with something funny to everything, but obviously were overthinking too much lol.

if there are chuckles then its not dead silence

i've got feelings too, ya know - inbetweeners

For my theater we got a bunch of laughter but me and my family were like

"Why everyone laughing..this ain't funny"

Which was pretty funny for you and your relatives was it not?

I rarely (if ever) see a comedy in cinema but when i do i usually have more fun watching people laugh over stuff that isn't funny then the movie. Also goes for standup and cabaret btw,so much laughter just because people think they need to laugh after jokes. They don't even care if its funny, they just laugh on queue like they're automated canned laughter generators with a pulse.

Dude!

I invited all my friends and family for a streaming screening experience. None of us paid any money.

I laid on snacks, drinks, a great atmosphere. We were all ready to watch it.

As the movie went on, all we could hear were the crickets outside and it was dead silent throughout almost every single joke. There were moderate chuckles here and there, but never once did an eruption of laughter happen. It was extremely awkward throughout the experience. Toward the middle half of the film people started to get up and leave!!!

I did end up leaving and going back to the store where I bought drinks, refreshments, snacks and even WEED and getting my money back. They didn't even kind of question giving me a refund, saying something like billing McCarthy for crimes against humanity or something. I wouldn't have put up a fight for it, but I didn't seem to be the first one asking for a refund. There was a long line after me!

The reason I'm writing this is to say if you think you should see this film just wait don't even bother.

Are you an SJW ? If so, please kill yourself immediately! Thanks

I thought you wanna talk about dead silence of James Wan. You should watch Conjuring 2, a lot of screaming there. By the way, I like (not love) this movie, its okay. I laugh a lot for some part. I dunno why people always writing like this for every movie in imdb, I respect your opinion but you should write at the end,"some people like it, some people hate it" & you dont. You write like this is the worst movie in the world that you ever watched. What can we do, we cant force people to hate what we hate.

HORROR THRILLER IS MY FOOD!

Incredibly bad. When the actors themselves read the script, they must have felt that too. Another paycheck is all.

The people in my audience weren't that uptight I guess. The entire place was laughing.
