Exeunt (Series Finale) Question (Spoiler)

In the final minutes of the show, Morse loaded up a single chamber of the revolver he’d recently acquired from Thursday, spun the cylinder and then fired it off camera. By all appearances it looks like he intended to play Russian Roulette. Of course we see him still alive a bit later. So, are we to believe he aimed the gun at his head, pulled the trigger, survived and then fired the gun in a different direction? If so, why? Because he was despondent about missing his chance with Joan and the departure of his colleagues and didn’t care if he lived or died? Seemed out of character for him.

reply

That firing the gun was insanely out of character. He knew the bullet had to land somewhere. He wouldn't have endangered anyone for a stunt. But it was greatly suspenseful for those who'd never seen the original series and knew he lived to fight another day.

Consistent characterization wasn't this series strong suit. Although the doctor seemed the same in both series. I loved Max, in both incarnations.

Thanks, I’m glad I’m not alone in finding Morse’s action out of character.

reply

No, you are not alone. It was beyond "out of place" for the Morse we knew. Unless they were latterly trying to suggest to us we don't know anything about Morse or Endeavour (or that his distressing convo with Thursday sent him into lalaland insanity, which is the only possible explanation for the "projectile" scene.)
