How was he so tough and adequate?

SPOILERS ALERT, in this movie, how was Stellan Skarsgard's character, an ordinary elderly man in his 60s working as a snow plowing man in Norway, able to confront including physically and defeat, kill, survive the wraths of and even carefully set them against each other, a group of experienced and dangerous armed Norwegian criminals, and mostly survive and not get killed himself, given that, perhaps, his character isn't intended to be seen as a typical indestructible, Hollywood or Scandinavian, "action" hero?

Was he just lucky or did he also have some other previous experience in such fields, thanks.
