Granted they didn't start a relationship, but they probably would have if circumstances would have been different
He is younger in the film than in the book. But she did turn from 26 to 27 in the film, lessening the gap between them.
Still, 9 years in the book isn't all that much to me although four or five seems a little more realistic.
