OMG HOW IS MS. DAVIS A SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN THIS????

OMG HOW IS MS. DAVIS A SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN THIS???? CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY SHE IS IN THAT CATEGORY AND NOT IN LEAD ACTRESS POSITION FOR AN OSCAR??? GODD@MNIT!!!

They better not pull the Meryl Streep BS they did with Ms. Davis in 2012 again with Ruth Negga this year either.

It's a ploy to guarantee she wins, as she did the Golden Globe in the same category. In the face of all the racism accusations of last year, blacks will win the 2 best supporting Oscars, and Moonlight will win Best Picture.

Why does the Oscars HATE to put Black Women in the Best Actress category??? And when they do the BS they pull to avoid giving them a win is unbelievable (like that "Meryl deserved her THIRD Oscar crap" excuse in 2012 when Ms. Davis won every other major award for the Help, but somehow couldn't receive the Oscar for Best Actress after all of that).

Don't know the Academy does "hate" to nominate blacks for best actress. You only cite one example, and a poor one. Streep is the most respected actress in Hollywood – an icon, a legend. Most actors don’t just respect her – they are awed by her. Harvey Weinstein, the most skillful Oscar politician in the industry, went on a campaign claiming it was a disgrace that this greatest of actresses hadn’t been honored in 30 years. It wasn’t Viola’s race that denied her the Oscar that year. It was Meryl’s unequaled stature and Harvey’s relentless campaigning.

No, she had not. She lost the BAFTA, Golden Globe and some critics awards to Streep.

It was supporting I guess in the sense of the length of Denzel's scenes and lines
but I agree it was not a supporting role but a lead role. She was very good.

Well, at least Emma Stone has been nominated for her jaw-droppingly bad and one-note tone deaf role in La La bLand.

You forgot to add that she plays essentially the same character as all her other movies. The wide-eyed, perky go-getter.

Sometimes there is a fine line between supporting and best actor or actress.

Anthony Hopkins won best actor for Silence of the Lambs. He was in the film for about 15 minutes.

Timothy Hutton won best supporting actor for Ordinary People. He was the main lead in the film. The only reason why he ended up in the supporting category was so he would not compete that year against De Niro and his role in Raging Bull.

It's that man again!!

What BS? Streep' s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher was by far better than any other female performance that year IMO

Has nothing to do with race. The Academy pulled the same thing last year with Alicia Vikander so she would win for The Danish Girl. For some reason this is something they only do with actresses so that two of the best female performances of the year both get trophies. It's stupid. The best of the best should be going head to head and let the voting begin.

For the most part studios are the ones who submit or campaign behind their stars to be in a certain category. Academy voters do not have to follow that suit and can place Viola in the lead category, but for the most part follow studio/campaign decisions.

Same with Emmys when network splits its own shows into different categories so they don't go against each other. CNN split Bourdain and United Shades of America, thus USA got an emmy.

Some networks decide not to, HBO didn't split GoT and TD both shows went vs each other. Could have placed TD into limited series.

Ruth Negga is irish... please leave your American racial divisions out of it and stop involving people from other countries that do not have these problems...
