If you like this, I have 2 movies to suggest
Timecrimes and
Primer
"I'd like to keep Spike as my pet"- Illyria, Angel S. 5

Primer

Time lapse was a lot better than primer.
sharedude, you're crazy! i love time traveling movies and this one was no exception. it was, like someone else already mentioned, more clever than it seems at first and just an enjoyable experience throughout.
but primer is just another level. i believe it may be the only air-tight time travelling movie i've seen.
crazy is a little harsh but I'll absolutely put my hand up and say Primer is the best time travel movie I've ever seen and every one that has come after it, doesn't really get near it even though movies like this one were really enjoyable. Primer blew me away and when I read up on it and found out it was basically made for lunch money, I couldn't believe it, the directors next movie was also really worth checking out.
I must "confess" that I don't know either of the two mentioned movies, but what are your (and others’) thoughts on movie "Predestination" (2014): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2397535/? That is, of course... if you've already seen it. :)

Wherever you go, there you are!
I didn't care for Predestination. I didn't like the overly-melodramatic tone and score, and I thought the story was gross.
shareThe 'story' was pretty much a direct copy+paste from one of the most famous Sci-Fi and time travel authors ever.
Say what you want about the acting/score/tone/etc. But the writing was air-tight.
It's an adaptation of a story that's about 10 pages long, so that's really not an accurate statement. I liked Predestination alright but it was heavily padded with filler in order be a feature. The worst thing about expanding the length is that the ending is heavily telegraphed and predictable, whereas in the short story it is a major twist.
sharePredestination was enjoyable as a movie, but it was one of those dime a dozen impossible time travel movies. Time Crimes is internally consistent, as in if you think about how time travel logically "should" work, everything in the movie makes sense, without some crazy gotcha theories (one of the reasons I didn't like Interstellar ending). Ex, you can't come from the future to save your own life, since you obviously survive to live into the future so you don't need saving.
Primer must be too smart for me, because I just get lost after half an hour.
and I thought the story was gross.
I've never been a big Eghan Hawke fan, but I enjoyed Predestination. The actress sold it, and when I realized who her love was, I found it both a little repulsive and very moving - two feelings that don't usually occur at the same time. I thought it made up for any of the movie's shortcomings.
sharePrimer really is the definitive time travel movie, but I personally find all time travel movies and TV interesting to an extent.
Look at Time Lapse, although a lot of people are slating it at least stimulated a lot of debate on the plot.
You know, I've tried to watch Primer twice, and both times I couldn't get through it. Does it pick up at all?
My personal favorite (although it has its shortcomings) is Triangle. I watched it three times over a weekend trying to put all the pieces in place, and each time I was riveted.
I've seen all the other movies listed here, and enjoyed them all to varying degrees. The best part, though, is coming to imdb and reading other people's take on the movie. The time loop movies, I think, draw posters that are willing to put more thought into their posts. :)
I too love Triangle, what a great movie.
Primer is a slow moving low budget cerebral movie. Shane Carruth rejects any movie norms, especially "Hollywood" type structures and pacing, so it "picks up" intellectually really.
Google image "primer timeline" and check out the 1st image for an idea on the depth of the movie.
I checked it out - wow. You talked me into it, it's back in my movie queue. :)
shareI, too, love Triangle. Great little film.
I quite like Primer but it doesn't hit me the same way Upstream Color does. A beautifully told love story with a sci-fi setting. Fantastic film in every way.
"Do you want to give him a kiss?"
Predestination surprised me at how innovative and well-told it was. The story seems shaky for a long time, but once things are explained later in the film, it just wows you.
Time Lapse was much better than I thought it would be. Definitely and interesting take on the whole knowing the future plot. Its biggest drawback was that the pacing just falls apart midway and doesn't improve til near the end. If they'd tightened up the middle, it would have been a better movie.
And while Primer eventually has a satisfying story with the whole time-travel bit, the first half is absolutely awful and overrated. I know the director decided to not care if his audience could understand the physics and advanced science that was being spouted by the characters, but it made it really hard to grasp onto the story until things finally started happening. That's not avant garde filmmaking, that's just pretentiousness.
Time Crimes is far superior.
very overrated and average.
shareAnd "Time Crimes" was a lot better than "Time Lapse" :) But, "12 monkeys" still rules.
shareNah. Donny Darko will forever rule ... the soundtrack alone is great.
Love 12 monkeys too. Very few time travel or alternate reality flicks that I have not liked on some level. It's my favorite premise.
Coherence is one of my favorite low budgets. I had to watch that three times looking for nuances I didn't catch previously. That deals with alternate realities though rather than time travel.
Agree, Donnie Darko is awesome, one of my all time favorites, but somehow I never really saw it as a time traveling story. I suppose it could really be interpreted like that though and then it definitely rules too :)

A few pages back someone mentioned the Spanish "The House at the End of Time" and I thought that one was pretty good.
If you liked "Time Lapse" then the '90s TV series "Early Edition" was similar in that the main character gets tomorrow's newspaper today, and has to make decisions about what to do in order to save people, avert tragedies, etc.
And if you want an oldie that's comedic, 1944's "It Happened Tomorrow," which some said was ripped off by "Early Edition."
Sounds interesting! I wil check it out!
"I'd like to keep Spike as my pet"- Illyria, Angel S. 5
Primer was very difficult to get - and I didn't want to get a headache thinking about it but Primer definitely gives you more to chew on whereas Time Lapse is more fun and easier to follow.
What hump?

Was a recommendation for people who like these types of movies...

When you suggest movies, you should think about throwing in little bits of information, like say, If you like this movie, watch Timecrimes. But do know, its a spanish film. So either know spanish, or read subtitles. So that way you save the people who dont want to read a movie, the task of finding the film, and being disappointed.
shareSo that way you save the people who dont want to read a movie, the task of finding the film, and being disappointed.
Actually quite a few people. It has nothing to do with being an idiot, or lazy, because I can assure you im neither. But when I watch a movie, i dont want to have to read along with it. To me, that just takes away part of the enjoyment of it. I can deal with some subtitles, but im not down for watching an entire movie where I have to read every piece of dialogue. There are many people who feel the same way.
shareIf you think this way you're missing lot of great movies. This is pure laziness on your side.
shareAgreed. Sure, I prefer not to have subtitles but I read fast and I really don't want to miss out on what could be a great movie. Los cronocrímenes is totally worth watching if you enjoyed Time Lapse.
shareThere is not A LOT of dialogue anyway in TimeCrimes so it wouldn't really bring down your enjoyment...
shareIt's a shame that an admin hasn't banned Ryan-lindsey1 from posting on IMDB for the remainder of his life since it's obvious that he's never going to have anything useful or intelligent to say :)
shareHahaha yes, because you post the most intelligent comments yourself there pal. Its a shame that someone hasnt sat you down, and told you that you are no prize yourself. If they banned people from IMDB, based on the level of inteligence that people portray in their comments, there would be very few people left to post. And I hate to break it to you, but you would not be one of them.
shareThere are many people who feel the same way.
Honestly I have to be in the right mood to watch a silent flick or read subtitles, but when the mood is right I've opened myself up to some good and fun stuff.
I still haven't gotten to Time Crimes. I have to put it back on my list for when the mood strikes.
ryan:
Oh,come on---if you can read period, reading subtitles shouldn't be a problem. I've done it since I was a teen, and frankly, you miss out on a hell of a lot of damn good foreign films with that attitude. I would have never gotten into the marvelous and insane world of Hong Kong and Bollywood films thinking like that---plus every foreign film isn't going to have subtitles---hell,I've even watched a couple of films without subs and survived,period---only because I didn't have a choice at the time. (I did watch those same movies with subs later on,first chance I got.) It dosen't take away from the experience of watching movies, it adds to it. I've always loved to read, so it's not a problem for me. I mean, not everybody in the world speaks English, and when you watch a movie on the screen with subs, there's more room to read them and see them better. I liked Timecrimes, even though it had a very dark, ironic ending, and even through Primer had a lot of tech talk in it, and is basically one of the more realistic, thoughtful, and carefully worked out time travel flicks I've seen---in terms out of how the main characters plan everything out, and how those plans get thrown off with some unexpected/unforeseen glitches despite that (the director is, or was an engineer, so that explains it.) I never felt like all the tech talk was over my head,though---everything that happens is basically broken down for the viewer in practical everyday terms to understand. The picture was certainly interesting enough to keep me hooked until its enigmatic ending, though. Its obvious low-budget actually made it more realistic to me,though.
yeah, I wish there was a website where you could type in the movie title and it would show up a whole bunch of valuable information and ratings for the movie...

If you click on my name there is a huge list of time travel stuff there in my list.
I just watched this one.
It was Ok film I give it a 5 out of 10.
Bit slow but not the worst I have seen and this is easy to understand.

You haven't seen Looper?
shareFlashforward - I loved that series! Won an Emmy and then got cancelled.
shareor Google. Hey about IMDB?
There is something called the Movie Review query engine.
Type in your movie and see what multiple critics have to say about it. http://www.mrqe.com/.
Personally, I prefer IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Between the two I get a good indication whether I personally would like a flick. Mind you, I don't go to the boards until after I watch.

Ehm, don't get me wrong, I love foreign film from just about all countries and wouldn't dream of watching any of them with anything but subs (dubs are the worst), but I'm quite sure IMDB stands for the Internet Movie Data Base....
And it is a shame when people can be narrow minded, I agree with that though I don't believe it's exclusive to any one nationality.
Correct. The help pages even have a "What is the Internet Movie Database?" question: http://www.imdb.com/help/?general/&ref_=hlp_brws
shareI couldnt get through 10 minutes of Project Almanac in theaters due to the (extra) shaky cam used. Time Lapse was OK but I didn't warm up to one single character in it--loved Time Crimes.
Speaking of foreign flicks, you must try the Japanese movie "Summer Time Machine Blues" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498567/) to see a very well-done example. "Ridiculous" plot of trying to figure out what to do about a broken remote for their crucial fan--but it's especially slick in the "time travel" aspect. The actors are seasoned because they've performed the script on-stage before the movie version. Cool use of retro (video game) sounds and past movie homages plus its very funny and touching too.
It can be had complete with English subtitles in the "usual" online locales...or its worth it to buy direct from here (it's NTSC but Region 2 so would need converting or a RF player for US):
http://www.yesasia.com/global/1004115249-0-0-0-en/info.html
Found a low-quality version on Youtube with English subs. Pretty standard fixed-timeline fare, but with a couple of positives. The journey of the remote was fun, as I thought there was a bootstrap paradox there for a bit, but it turned out not to be. And I did really like the idea that knowing the future allows one the opportunity to fulfill it. Thanks for the recommendation.
shareOh, the irony.
shareOuch. Please don't flame me because I see your point, but IMDB actually stands for Internet Movie Database. Just saying.

I absolutely loved coherence.
Same here!
Such an original movie...
People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs
YEAH! Big Coherence fan here. I've watched it three times after I first saw it and I predict I'll watch it again before this year is out.
I don't get the stale rewatch feeling with it and it's fun paying attention to all the little props and details.
I thought about watching Primer but the quality (of the image, not the plot) just looks SO bad, like it was recorded in the 70's or something
shareIt sucks, just a bunch of people talking about nerdy stuff
sharetanisaur:
It only sucks if you're used to seeing only loud,Hollywood action flicks. The image for Primer looks different because it was such a low-budget indie film (that took the director a couple of years to make) so of course it dosen't have that Hollywood polish, because it's not a Hollywood film---which Is what I liked about it in the first place. Plus the lead actor (the director himself) was kinda cute, anyway.
I found it difficult getting through the first time. It's not my favorite in the genre but it's worth a couple/few watches.
Ha, I haven't even watched it yet but was hoping it'd be as big a *beep* as those two. Definitely stand out brainy time travelling films.
shareIf those are seriously the only 2 films similar to this that you have to suggest, then my suggestion to you is to watch some more time travel/loop films. ;)
shareI have watched MANY! These two were some of the latest ones I watched so I just gave a suggestion.
Guess some people wanna find something to complain about and remark on. Go have a donut and maybe you will be in a better mood.
Oh and I also chose those two as suggestions it was very similar in style and execution. Indie movies with some sort of device to make the timetravel, or see into the future/past.
"I'd like to keep Spike as my pet"- Illyria, Angel S. 5
Because Primers time travel is realistic and possible if you believe in multiverse.
