Did this film have a SJW angle and if so did it kill it?

I never really cared for this film. I enjoyed the first reboot and, being honest, I also thought Into Darkness was ok despite the Khan business.

However this was a real turkey. Do you think it suffered from introducing that female warrior character? She came hot on the heels of The Force Awakens and seemed like a cheap Rey knock off. Was she or is that unfair?

I remember thinking at the time that she was actually worse than being a redundant introduction as she took screen time away from others - including the crew's very own Uhura which was daft given that these weren't actors with hours and hours of series time behind them that maybe we'd tired off, they'd only been in two films! So if they did introduce that character just for a bit of SJW empowerment brownie points it was a stupid loss to having just organically showing that with one of their own main characters.

Yes, great point - I agree.

They should have focused more upon fleshing out the existing rebooted female character. I for one would have enjoyed them delving further into the origins of Uhuru's sexy dancing which featured in the hit movie Star Trek V.

Non-American actors playing non-American space aliens, some of them women.

You can’t get more SJW than that.

All space aliens are non-American. We don't have any Alien-Americans yet.

I don't care for woke nonsense in my movies (I'm female) but I remember liking Jayla (yes...I had to look it up). I liked her look and thought she was a cute. I actually never associated her like Rey. There are ways you can add new diverse characters without them completely taking over the franchise. Rey took over the franchise; Jayla just became a part of it. I do remember not liking this movie as much as the other two and I remember not seeing a lot of the regular characters which was disappointing. It's always good to add new characters to the story but you can't do it at the detriment of the others. But I don't think her addition killed this film; it was the lack of direction and a weird/confusing/unmemorable storyline. Also, I can't believe this came out in 2016....it seems SOOOOOOOO long ago.

i think she was def introduced as Star Treks version of Rey. it was so close to TFA in time and creatively (JJ Abrams) she even had a similar backstory and carried a big stick as a weapon (and her speech pattern was seemingly modeled on Zoe Saldanas Avatar character ironically enough)

may as well have had Saldana/Uhrah as the female lead and kept Alice Eve from the previous film (and thrown out the story and come up with something else)
