How To Keep Favorite Shows from Being Cancelled - An Idea

My wife and I, both now retired, have a lifetime of experience with our favorite shows being cancelled, just when we are getting hooked.

We've actually reached a point where we are shocked when something we like isn't quickly cancelled.

But that doesn't make it any better when shows like Almost Human, Stargate Universe, Terra Nova, or Firely, etc., get dumped by any network.

We do understand though, that in this day and age, with all the entertainment options available to everyone, and the ability to skip or delete commercials and other advertising through devices like Tivo, advertisng revenues are way down for all networks (being now spread over hundreds of channels).

We also understand that all networks exist as profit-making and growing businesses; and that any program that does not have a higher Return on Investment (ROI) than a savings account or long-term investment program will always be dropped to try something else that will make more money for the company.

So my wife and I have tried to think of something that we as fans could do to help keep our favorite shows running for a very long time; rather than being dumped just when they are getting good.

Our answer is simple.

Let us subscribe monthly to a specific show; with automatic payments of $5 or $10 or so per month through PayPal, or another subscription service.

Not a blanket payment for the entire network, but money just for the show we want to support.

What would happen if one million fans of Almost Human put in $10 per month? Or even just $5 per month? Would most of us even notice $5 or $10 less in our pockets each month if it meant we got 24 episodes of our favorite shows each year?

And would 5 or 10 million dollars each month from a show's supporters change the entire system of what shows are created for the viewers who were voting with their direct deposit dollars? I think it would.

How do we start something like this to gives us control of our favorite shows with our wallets?

$5 a month is ridiculously expensive. If there was 1 million viewers, paying $1 per month, that's $1 million yearly. There should be a system in which production costs are divided between viewers and then a monthly cost. I mean, Netflix is $7.99 monthly for virtually limitless amount of TV shows, movies, etc. $5 is way too expensive.

I would pay MAYBE a dollar extra a month to see "Lie to Me" back on the air, or Netflix.
Idea for Netflix?? cancels out scheduling conflicts.... hmmm

the sad thing is we are paying 5-10 a month per show and letting big ad companies pick what we get to see. does anyone think a 12oz coke costs $1 ?

we have made many mistakes in the last 50 years by alloying big companies to make our choices and standing by and saying "there's nothing i can do."

look at the system, someone has a product that costs 10c to produce then they charge 50c and make huge profit, fund a nascar, hire actors and produce bad commercials, take out ads in magazines, and decide what gets put on TV and how long it stays there.. oh wait that's the network sorry... who makes more money for shows that more people watch so they watch more ads by companies that pull funding if they don't like what is said on the show.

so you get situations where a man says in an interview well being gay isn't really the way to go in my opinion, and they kick him off his show until the other people on it say well *beep* it we just won't do it anymore, and the execs realize that, oh no these aren't trained actors who know how to boot lick, and I'm the boss... unless they quit and then I'm the executive producer of *beep* and unemployed.

but what can you do we don't care about the products or who makes them or the branding or the shows they sponsor, i think most people buy the product because they like it and not because they have been told it's cool.

well anyone under 5 and over 35 anyway :P 18-35 demographic anyone ? 18 cause they have their own money for once and 35 because hopefully 36+ aren't dumb *beep* trying to impress people anymore.

OH SPOILER ALERT!

the only way you will make it happen is to buy the network and also absorb losses for lower rated shows that you like.

So basically no, only the rich get to make decisions, very sad it is.

all you can do is get Netflix and watch great shows that have lasted many seasons or petition them to pick it up

Actually, I just got a great idea, what if fans create their own tv networks through crowd sourcing, but the major TV netwoks will probably kill it through government regulation or buy them out.

Yes, customized TV content needs to happen. Why aren't there channels/networks that let you choose which shows or type of shows to subscribe to, with the option of paying extra for no commercials? Or the option of paying extra for no commercials in general?

reply

I wish Hulu Plus or Netflix would pick up on this, and stream original TV programs with strong fan bases that are willing to pay a small fee for a specific show to continue instead of depending on extremely outdated Nielsen's Ratings system.

If a show has a small enough audience already it is going to be difficult to fund it with the even smaller amount of people from that audience willing to pay.

I would claim that for a show with one million viewers 20% or less of those people would be willing to pay, not enough to fund a show like this one.

I say 20% because that is usually the percentage of people that stick with a service if it stops being free. Could be higher, could be much, much lower, plus the people that simply lack the disposable income to do it even if they were willing to.

I, for one, would not pay any additional money to watch any of the shows that I am currently watching, I rather go read a book or go for a walk or something.

Paying extra for no commercials used to be called "cable", look what happened. We ended up paying and forced to watch commercials anyway.

I like it.

But on a more immediate note, I hope you will join the Almost Human 1st Anniversary campaign to make a Wall of Mail at Warner Bros.http://ahfancon.tumblr.com/post/102502208680/ahfancon-this-is-it-the-b ig-push-if-youre

Not liking that idea. At all. I already pay $10 a month for Netflix. $10 a month for Hulu plus, $10 a month for Xbox Live, $10 a month for Amazon Prime. And there are commercials on Hulu. Which are mostly tv shows. Netflix and amazon are all movies with some shows. I pay enough.
I can't believe they hadn't canceled Simpsons yet. Who ever watches that anymore? I think it has to do whether the execs like the shows or not too, along with ratings. But it has to have HUGE ratings to stay on even when they want to cancel it. There are so many good shows that have been canceled. Let's look at one of the top shows that was canceled back in the 60s and just from reruns turned into something so huge. StarTrek. Only went for 3 seasons. 79 episodes. And ppl loved it at the time. So it really makes no sense why shows are canceled. I think it's all Hollywood politics.

It's good you're thinking out of the box but this model sort of exists already.
There's HBO, Netflix, Showtime etc. which have the pay model albeit for the entire channel.

Paying just $5 for an episode or two is just cost prohibitive if not enough people put money toward it.

Also, I love Stargate SG1 and Atlantis but totally disliked Stargate:Universe. Even Firefly, I didn't really like. It was alright and I didn't even care it was canceled.
So what about people like us who might drop out after a few eps and you're no longer collecting $5 million a month?

Also, will we still be subjected to ads?

What if we liked 10 shows, do we pay $50 extra per month now? What if some other show decides to charge $15 now because it is popular etc.

So, this is probably not a good idea at all IMO.

What will likely help more are these -

- reduction of piracy
- getting rid of the stupid Nielsen system and overhauling it with a better mechanism.
- not buying shows partly (i.e. ordering only one season) with no story written beyond season 1 so it ends up slowly deteriorating and eventually becomes so horrendous that you now HATE the show. Shows should be bought in FULL or just forget about it.
- don't mess with the show creator - no more airing them out of sequence or relegating it to death spots like Fri 11pm or Sun 4pm etc.

Personally, now with today's tech, I just prefer the Netflix approach of spending money, making a show and then airing it at once.

Their House of Cards was terrific along with Orange is the New Black but Marco Polo is wretched and horrible. So it will be a mixed bag.

Nobody who actually LIKED Tera Nova has the right to bitch about anything.
