Why did they include the scene with the angry black man?

You might not remember this scene; it occurs near the beginning of the film as they are driving to the professor's house. The woman who is driving is not paying attention to the road and almost hits a black guy. This black guy then goes NUTS and starts SCREAMING at them to get out of the car. Then they drive away and this scene is never mentioned again.

Why the hell is this in the movie at all? Is it just there to stop and be racist for a bit, then continue on the way? Seriously....It just boggles my mind as to why this scene made it into the movie.

My best guess would be that it's supposed to foreshadow what the crew ends up doing at the end of the film, with how they basically just come onto the Monster's "property" and piss him off without realizing it...but, uh, yeah it still ends up problematic with the racial implications.

It kind of reminds me of the two random "friends" of the crack addict guy though. Now they're some characters I can't exactly see the point of.

I will stick up for this movie on many grounds, but I agree that the scene with the angry black man served no purpose and was a distraction. I cringe every time I see it (yes, I admit to watching this movie several times).

It was suppose to show that no matter the intelligence, some people you can't reason with. Jonathan's whole theory about the monster not being a cold blooded murderer was based on that he was intelligent like a human so you could reason with him. But not all humans can be reasoned with. Especially not when they are angry.

That interpretation gives the movie a level of sophistication higher than I would have given it.

Foreshadowing the theme that some people /beings can’t be reasoned with, or that violence is in their nature.

It helped create a tense, confrontational atmosphere.

It showed that our protagonists are not the macho, in-your-face, badass heroes, as they fled from the black man. Hence, our protagonists are no match for the monster. They will undoubtedly lose handily against it.
