Offensive and hurtful use of the word "retard"

Dear writers, producers, directors, actors, actresses (esp. Aubrey Plaza), et. al.,

This movie was entertaining. But, I am not writing to comment on the entertainment value of this movie. I am writing to say it was offensive and hurtful because of the numerous utterances of the word "retard" in the dialogue.

In general, the script had a decent amount of originality and amusement, which is why I find it so surprising that the writers were compelled to use such antiquated and offensive jokes employing the word "retard". Was it for shock value? Or, was it due to a lack of originality? Either way, it was certainly poor judgment, unsympathetic, and hurtful.

I plead to you. Please consider and understand how hurtful this word can be when used in derogatory context. Not only did you use this word unoriginally and selfishly in failed attempts to humor your audience, but you are also indirectly condoning the derogatory use of this word to your many viewers.

You may argue that my opinion is overly sensitive. I assure you that I am very much a detractor of political correctness. However, one measurement we use to determine an appropriate level of "PC" is the amount of guilt we feel. Would most people use this word in front of someone diagnosed with mental retardation? Presumably, they wouldn't. Therefore, we should use the same judgment about not using the word in a movie in which some of your viewers are afflicted with mental retardation.

Please consider to be more sensitive with this word. I understand that sensitivity is not humorous, but neither is hurtfulness towards others. I would love to say that this movie made me laugh. Honestly, it did up to a certain point until hearing the word "retard" used negatively (and, then repeatedly). Afterward, it actually made me (and others who were watching the movie with me) quite sad.

Sorry for the rant, but this affected me personally and many others. I beg that you'll take this into consideration in all your future endeavors. Best regards.
