Zero chance, but..

I know everyone, including me, has gave thier opinion on what a Riley/Maya relationship would mean. I know there's zero chance of it happening, but I way be for it. The love those 2 show each other is unlike anything I've seen on any TV show ever. And more than a lot of real life couples. I wish Disney would allow this to happen, but at least we get hints every 2 minutes lol. 😪

reply

I don't agree that there is zero chance of it happening. For me, nothing else but at the very least one of the two of them coming out as queer in some way, makes sense. I think the show just doesn't actually work any other way and that them becoming a romantic couple is where the writing is going. If it doesn't happen it is because Disney stepped in or the show gets cancelled.

For me, this is a hundred percent where the show is leading and maybe i want to think that Disney is better then it actually is, but for now, based on the evidence aka the show canon, that this is where they are going. They are going to do it. In Season 4.

It is 2016. It is time.

reply

I agree with you 1000%. If it doesn't happen its because Disney stepped in to stop it out of fear. I know its not because of Rowan, Sabrina, or the writers. I do think every minute of writing leads to that. Any boy/girl scenes just havnt worked together in any match. Except for Farkle and Smackle. And I really can't we Riley or Maya with any other girl but each other. Its like they are obsessed with each other and don't have a lot of scenes with other girls except Smackle.

I'm curious is seeing the writings on the wall about the potential relationship of Riley and Maya, has Disney Channel on edge. There was one other instance where there was a lesbian couple on Good Luck Charlie and they squashed that quickly.

Back on subject. I believe this has the potential of being a relationship along the lines of the two of them only having feelings for each other. It's their emotional that attracts them to each other. The reason I think this is possible is because of a short lived MTV show called Faking It. Maybe in the process of being in a relationship together, if it happens, one of them begins to drvelop an attraction to girls. Which could be an interesting story arc if it didn't work out between the two, even if it's on again off again like Cory and Topanga.

Definitely don't see these two with anyone else.

There's so many people who won't at least entertain the chance of this happening. Whether intentional or not, there's something there between the two. It could just be the actresses being completely comfortable around each other and as an audience we're seeing that on screen.

Michael Jacobs always mentions his he has a plan in how the show will go. I'm curious if this story arc is a part of it.

I'm just hoping more people are at least open minded enough to entertain the possibility.

I do think that there are a lot of people that are just not open to the girls being a couple. I don't think that should have any baring on what happens in the show though. I just don't care.

Also, for me, it is not about the chemistry between the two girls. That is there, but is not to me proof that they will be a couple. It is the writing, the show canon, that seems to heavily hint at them becoming a couple. In the very first episode, Riley came back and opened the door to the subway car, and the hat lady said, "she opened that door with the power of love". Then Riley tells Maya that if this is her world, the first person she wants in it is Maya. And that is just one episode. They then run to Riley's parents and tell them that they can't keep them apart.

There have been a hundred pieces of dialogue as well as set pieces and parallels since then. The most significant being Riley directly comparing her and Maya's relationship to her parents and calling Maya her extraordinary relationship. Honorable mentions to the queer language with friends of Dorothy in Christopher park. Maya saying she doesn't like nice guys, yikes. Maya saying she doesn't know what she likes and grabbing Farkle after he says woah, telling him don't say woah when i haven't figured it out. There are so many things. I could go on.

Their relationship is the center of the show and always has been. We will see, but i do think, even if they don't get together all the relationships with boys on the show don't exist. Riley and Lucas are going to break up, as far as i am concerned their break up was inevitable when Riley says we are letting boys into our lives, who knows how long that will last at the end of the episode where they got together. Lucas and Maya have never been a thing and there will be no return of the triangle. Neither of the girls will ever date Farkle. Also, while i like Zay, there is no evidence that is going anywhere.

Regardless, the girls get the best moments in ever episode.

It is 2016 - That claim is B.S.

I am well aware that there are people that are adamantly against gay couples being depicted on television shows. I just do not care at all. It is not a good reason for it to not happen on Girl Meets World.

reply

They ought to go that route. They depicted a lesbian couple on Good Luck Charlie and then a character on I Didn't Do It said she had two dads. But do you think this was only fine because on these shows, it was a one time thing or we didn't see the parents? An ongoing gay couple display is something new and it may seem abrupt. Perhaps if Disney displayed more gay characters in their shows in the past in guest appearances they would be more comfortable doing so.

But hey, it won't be the first time potential couples fell through. Look at Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. You figured Olivia and Elliot would have gotten together and they obviously had romantic chemistry in the twelve seasons they spent together, but that never fell through because Dick Wolf didn't want it to happen. The showrunner did though and was trying to push it.

reply

Sabrina is to much of a face for Disney. Riley might be gay but not Maya Disney won't risk it. Just like it would never happen with Liv or Maddie either. This isn't freeform. Disney would be getting all the heat and Lawsuits from parents and don't tell they wouldnt. Just far to risky for businesses

reply

Well considering that they have both been attracted to only boys, what would be the point?

This whole idea that every one that is close has to be physically attracted to each other is nonsense. I think they made it quite clear from the beginning that the show was about friendship.

reply

I don't think any of are saying that just because their close that they are automatically attracted to one another. I believe that the way this is being written and directed that it lends to the possibility of there being more to the friendship. Some of those moments are overt while others are well camouflaged.

If we compare the female friendships on Disney Channel shows past and present, Riley and Maya's friendship feels different compared to the other shows. Not once have I personally felt that any of the other shows conveyed a friendship like the one that we see on GMW. They are clearly showing the audience that Riley/Maya is Cory/Shawn 2.0. They've amped up the closeness between the two female leads. Season one, i don't see anything to show that a Riley/Maya relationship was possible. Season 2 slowly started to change my mind that maybe this is a possibility, especially during the whole triangle fiasco. Ski Lodge is what made me say, "you know what, I wonder if the writers are intentionally doing this"

I'm not saying that they have to be in a relationship. I just think that if they chose to go that route, it would be a natural and logical progression of the story. So other than it being DC why not take that chance.

What's the harm in doing so? Isn't it possible for them to be attracted to each other in ways besides physical?

reply

I have never thought there was more then friendship on other Disney shows either. I do think that Riley and Maya are being written differently. I actually thought they were leading to romance from really early in the show. I just kept telling myself, that's crazy, they will never do that. The thing is as the show has gone on it is become overt and obvious, in my opinion. I am not sure how anyone can pretend after Ski Lodge both parts and really after True Maya and She Don't Like Me.

I actually don't think the show is making a direct parallel between Riley and Maya to Cory and Shawn. They have made those comparisons, certainly they have. They have always compared Riley and Maya to Topanga. Compared Riley and Maya both to Cory. They have compared Riley and Maya's relationship to Cory and Topanga's. Even Farkle, obviously making comparisons to Minkus also is compared in a lot of ways to Shawn as well. I just think there is a little bit too much of a push to make direct comparisons there, when those comparisons are much more fluid.

reply

I agree with you 100%. I'm only comparing how close their friendship is. I do see how Riley and Maya can be interpreted as the next Cory and Topanga. There are plenty signs that points that way. I'm upset that there are so many people who aren't willing to be open to the idea of it. Instead they shut it down quickly.

reply

I don't think they have both been show to be attracted to only boys.

Also, characters are always friends on shows. There are all sorts of shows with same gendered friends. Probably every Disney channel show. How about this time they are more then friends? How about this time it's different? If someone doesn't want to watch a show where two female characters are more then friends, then they can watch one of the other shows.

reply

I am not saying there is nothing there, I am just saying that I do not see it. I see it on Best Friends Whenever, on The Big Bang Theory both Amy and Raj have shown (at least) bi-leanings.

While I do not think it could not be naturally written in, I do not think that the writers have shown Riley or Maya leaning that way.

reply

I think the difference with Amy and Rag or even Shawn and Cory in Boy Meets World is that those things were played for laughs. It isn't played for laughs on Girl Meets World.

reply

There is an old expression that goes along the lines of "In jest there is truth". Though played for laughs, I get the feeling that the writers imply that there is some feelings of those sorts with those characters (especially Amy). I just do not see it between Maya and Riley.

reply

I think that in real life there is truth in jest, but these are tv shows. These are things being written by people and in that case, what is done in jest is what they consider not going to happen. Like Lucas and Smackle. That is not going to be a thing. It is a joke. With Riley and Maya, "My mother and father met each other very early in life and stayed together for the rest of their live. Our first boyfriends Maya, who knows how long that's going to last? We're going to meet new people all of the time. But if there's one thing I'm sure of in my life is that you, are my extraordinary relationship Maya."

That was not a joke. It is over canon evidence. That Maya is Riley's most important relationship. They said it again in Terror 3. Not seeing it though has no bearing on what is actually happening in the show. It is like using chemistry as evidence. Chemistry is so subjective as to be completely pointless to use as evidence.

reply

That statement is open to interpretation as to the type of relationship. I see it as platonic best friends. You see it as something more. In my view, if Riley meant it the way you believe she meant it then she would not attempt a relationship with Lucas and Maya would not keep hope alive for a future romance with Josh. I am not saying that you are wrong and maybe the writers meant it the way you see it. I am just saying that I THINK (not KNOW)you are misinterpreting the intent. I am not trying to change your mind but, unless the writers become more obvious in their intent, you are not going to change mine.

reply

Well we were talking about whether or not it was done for laughs. My point was that it was not. As i said, chemistry and interpretation are not relevant as evidence. I was not trying to change your mind either, just was stating the fact that the dialogue between Riley and Maya is not done for laughs.

reply

I don't think stiff like chemistry and interpretation are as baseless for an argument as you say it is. I believe when people talk about chemistry, it's an amalgamation of writing, directing, acting and in some cases location. I understand where you're coming from about how chemistry especially isn't a valid point to fully defend one's position on the matter.

For me when I speak of chemistry I'm acknowledging that each of the pieces of the production of a show does result in quality of the chemistry between to characters. The writing is crucial for this part. How the actors are being directed at any given time can also influence what we view as chemistry. But most importantly it's up to the actors/actresses delivery of the lines. Set pieces and locations can help add to the story. Cinematography is also equally crucial in this. For me, at least, Chemistry is a simple way explaining that the overall production is leading me to feel one way or another.

As you mentioned consistently in your comments, I believe the writing is subtly hinting to a Riley and Maya couple. But we can't ignore that up until this point that this is pure speculation based on how we're interpreting the acting, writing, directing and so forth.

I believe it was you who pointed out the location of the park in True Maya on another post. It's this moment that I think that the GMW team started to really begin to show their plans for the show.

Could we be wrong? Yes, especially if the show doesn't get to fully develop the way Jacobs intends it to be.

reply

I do agree that chemistry is an amalgamation of the writing, directing, and acting. The writing and directing being what we are trying to get at. We are trying to get at what the producers of the show are trying to show us through a scene.

I just think for the purposes of discussion it is pretty pointless. I can say that i believe the chemistry between two characters is on point and it is romantic, but the problem that lies with using it is proof in a discussion is that someone else may completely disagree with me.

People constantly point out the way a character is looking at another character as proof of romantic feelings. That look was romantic, they say. Whereas i may see nothing but an actor in the background trying to pay attention to the scene and look where they were told to look, half the time literally looking where all the other characters in the scene are looking as well. No romantic vibes to said look. That is why it is pointless.

Some say this look from this character is romantic, look at their chemistry, the writing, directing, and acting must points to romance. Then when someone else seeing the exact same scene, will be like no, look at that other character, their look is romantic, look at their chemistry, the writing, directing and acting must point to this romance instead. That makes it pointless to the discussion.

I find it more helpful in such discussions to point to things that we can prove are done purposeful by the writing, directing, and producing people. For example, calling the park Christopher Park. For example, using the name Dorothy. For example, Maya's head full of Rileys. For example, it was written into the script that Riley was to put her arm through Maya's at that moment. For example, dialogue where Riley directly compares her parents relationship, "my mother and father met very early in life and stayed together for the rest of their lives" to her relationship to Maya "one thing i do know, is you are my extraordinary relationship, Maya". I could obviously go, but i will stop.

I think these things are objective facts that happened in the show, whereas while i think chemistry means something, and is real, it is not something that the majority of people are good at reading and is not something that the majority of people agree on either.

reply

PS. I completely agree that at this point what with them putting in Christopher Park and friends of Dorothy in true Maya that there can really be no question what they intend, either that, or they are trying to trick people to keep them watching by putting in queer icons which is just reprehensible.

not every show needs a homosexual/lesbianism plot much like how every show doesn't need an middle eastern or African American character.

I always thought that Shawn And Cory were a perfect couple and they came so close. It was sisapointment when he married topanga.

This show is so lame that I don't care what happens, but they might be holding off until the characters are a little older or the show is cancelled.
