Girl Meets Cancelation. Why do you think...

it got canceled.
Ratings?? Ratings started to tank in s2 and s3 they were just bad in comparison to its previous seasons.

Costs?? The longer a show goes on the more costly it gets.

Story?? Lot of people hayed the non triangle thing and maybe the show became to much of the whole life lesson thing instead of being fun.

Fandom?? This fandom was pretty brutal at times.

Me I blame Rowan and her fem garbage for bringing down ratings. Constantly insulting a entire gender isn't going to make them want to watch your show.

reply

I do agree the ratings plus the repeated activism and in addition to rowan activism crap killed the show.

reply

It was the most highly rated show on the Disney channel - Rowan's activism did no harm to the show of any kind whatsoever - nor was it "crap" - Rowan, brilliant as she is, proved that she had contact with both the problems and the real and necessary solutions to those problems.

reply

Ratings. Ratings. Ratings.

A:

1.5 year Crash & Bernstein...

3 year Dog With A Blog...

2 year I Didn't Do It...

"Well *that* didn't work out!" failure.

Stop being immature brats who think you know it all about production costs or Rowan's personal feminist beliefs aired publicly.

Disney is a multi-BILLION dollar company. They don't give a *flip* about DisChan production costs when the ratings are there.

Truth is, ALL the shows I listed were ALWAYS on the ropes in terms of soft ratings, barely eeking by annual renewals. If the ratings were there, the show would get a full (4 year) series run.

Girl Meets World fans are soooo delusional, you'll demand 6 years on DC then hiiiighly unrealistic Freeform picking it up for another 6 years, THEN a spin-off. Nothing is enough for you brats and now you got your wake-up call.

Now please move on and accept the concept is over of a legacy series.

Those actors who are good enough will prosper. Those who aren't will do another I Didn't Do It.

I LOVED Dog With A Blog and wished it had gone on for 4. It didn't and I moved on and still enjoy reruns.

You fans of this show should do the same.

I think the triangle was a mistake, but triangles are always mistakes. I think the fact that the audience didn't know what was going on on the show didn't help. People ship Maya with Lucas and Riley with Farkle like those things were happening on the show and not just in their head.

I don't think Rowan has anything to do it because people bring that up and i have no idea what they are talking about or what she said and i am part of the fandom. The average viewer of this show isn't going to care what an actor says on twitter.

I think that the producers wanted Riley and Maya to become a romantic couple and Disney didn't want that.

reply

I think blame lies with Rowan. She was pretty off putting with her rants. She also supposedly kept pushing for non-Disney storylines like trans characters. I can see the producers getting fed up. I have heard she had trouble getting along with the actors who play Lucas and Josh at times and that Sabrina and the actor so plays Farkle tried to distance themselves from her on a couple of occasions. I think the higher ups could foresee possible issues coming up with her. I also think there is a reason Sabrina has received a lot more promotion than Rown and that that says a lot about how executives see their careers panning out.

reply

"Sabrina and the actor so plays Farkle tried to distance themselves from her on a couple of occasions."

Where did you hear that might I ask??

reply

I do share some of the blame toward Rowan as well. She tried to force her fem garbage down the throats of the fans with a disastrous episode titled "Girl Meets STEM." She is also quick to shout down fans that do not agree with her beliefs, yet calls for equality and freedom of speech at the same time. Sounds like she's not all the way there in terms of common sense.

In any case, "...STEM" was one of the worst episodes of the series aside from "Girl Meets Fish" and "Girl Meets World of Terror!"

reply

I think its just as simple as it sucked and everyone knew it. It never lived up to it's potential.

reply

Yup. Even fans themselves were turning on it

reply

Costs?? The longer a show goes on the more costly it gets.

Only after the first contract expires and they have to renegotiate. It would not expire in three years.

2017! The Year of WestAllen. Time to bring Linda back. Where y'all at Snowbarry?

reply

I personally believe it was a show with lots of potential that it didnt always live up to the hype and rowans constant political though well intended was a turnoff after awhile.

reply

It had potential but blew it. An episode about a lost teddy bear and a girl not liking her (even tho she had like 2 bullies already)?? C'mon now. For me it was doomed after game night (I'll never forgive Michael for that disaster D':) and doomed even more when the triangle came about!!

reply

The teddy bear episode was really stupid.the triangle could be been handled better but was poorly done, even the the Eric, Rachel, and Jack one from boy meets world was handled better.

reply

I don't think it was unrealistic to hope Girl Meets World would live beyond 3 seasons, after all Boy Meets World was like what? Six or seven seasons long?

However, I think the actual execution of the show wasn't up to par with Boy Meets World, partly because of Disney Channel's own self destructive nature. Disney Channel pumps out these shows with a whole new crop of potential teen super stars with no intent of providing quality material. They are simply just looking for their next perfect face of the network to easily market to kids and if they're lucky, they get a decent show.

Which leads me to my next point. It is absolutely ridiculous to think that Rowan's outspoken personality and beliefs had anything to do with the fate of the show. Rowan knows her voice is able to reach millions of people and she is using it to spread awareness about many issues some adults might not even understand. That doesn't mean you have to agree with what she says, but at least she was able to educate you about an issue that maybe you wouldn't have heard about otherwise, thus inspiring you to be more informed and aware of your own personal beliefs. Are we all forgetting that Disney has dealt with waaaay bigger "scandals" like Vanessa Hudgens's nude photos during the height of High School Musical? Or Even Miley's photo scandals and rebellious behavior while she was on Hannah Montana? As a multi-million dollar company, with not much interest in politics and such, Disney would never (for a lack of a better word) discipline, or even more so cancel a show, based on a cast member's political statements (within reason, if they went on a deranged offensive rant or something Disney would step in). In doing so by default, they would be making a statement about issues in which they do not want to be involved in. TV is a ratings game, nothing more.

Having worked as producer for a large network, (one that just happens to be a part of the Disney family) I can attest to the fact that the ratings are what killed this show. But I think there are multiple reasons behind this:

1. Mediocre writing. The first season thrived on the ratings based on nostalgia and the overall hype around the show. The plot lines of the first season were interesting and age appropriate for the characters...minus Auggie who I could argue was annoying enough to kill the show on his own. However, season two introduced the whole love triangle which was completely unnecessary and unrealistic. I have never in my life heard of someone "becoming someone else" to make sure the guy was a good fit. I'll give them points for trying to be original, but it just wasn't believable. I'll buy into a whole love triangle thing, but not dragged out in the way they did. They were too nice to the characters and too desperate to wrap everything up in a pretty little Minnie Mouse bow. If they wanted to create drama, the best way to do that is by breaking up the golden duo that is Riley and Maya. We get it, they are the best friends in the whole wide world, but to expand their characters and properly show their relationship, the writers should have made more drama between them. Really what pre-teen to teenage friends haven't got into a fight over a boy before? Instead they decided to keep everything perky and happy in "Rileytown," with whacky episodes that served no purpose in story arc or character development....in fact they literally spent like a season and a half "developing" Maya's character and then completely reversing it (JK she's not actually growing as a person, she just decided to morph into her best friend, because that's totally normal.)

2. Wrong Network. If the show's creators were serious about the issues they wanted to cover in the show, Disney was not the right network. Disney Channel is marketing towards kids, I would guess 13 and below. Not that younger children shouldn't be informed about some of these issues, but I think that is over estimating their attention span. Especially today, kids and teens have access to information 24/7, keeping their attention is harder than ever and will require more than Disney Channel's beloved single camera sitcom. I honestly think GMW would have done much better on Netflix. Netflix offers a wider audience, with excellent production value. I'm not even a huge Miranda Sings fan, but Hater's Back Off was a much better production than GMW. But I don't know the behind the scenes technicalities of the rights and such to BMW/GMW franchise. Netflix brought back Full House and Gilmore Girls with HUGE success, I feel that GMW would have been equally successful, but then again maybe Netflix feared getting pegged as "reboot central"

3. Cutting the Cable Cord. People cutting cable due to cost is much more impactful than we realize. Networks are taking huge hits in ratings because of this, even the network I work for which broadcasts certain events in the athletic nature. Millions of viewers might sound like a lot, but ratings across the board have been at an all time low this year. Even more of a reason why I think the show would have done better on Netflix.

Those are just my thoughts about the matter. Even though I despised most of the writing, there were a few really good episodes that truly inspired me. I am genuinely disappointed that GMW wasn't given the chance to grow further and cover more hard hitting topics, but maybe we can all dream for another network to pick up the show. Boy Meets World survived a network change after all!

reply

Thank you for this well-written and cogent post. I happen to agree with pretty much all of it. Out of curiosity, what were the episodes that inspired you, if you can remember?

reply

Thanks for the compliment Brooklyn329! Off the top of my head, I was really inspired by the Secret of Life episode, Lucas's character was in desperate need of development and I thought that was an interesting take on it. The concept of "People Change People" being the secret of life was somewhat of a lightbulb moment for me. I love writing and that theme inspired me to look at the way the people you surround yourself with influence and change your life. It actually gave me enough inspiration to start writing a novel (which will probably never see the light of day, but who knows!)

The other episode I really enjoyed was the Rileytown episode, purely because of Rowan's performance. I wish they would have taken that storyline a little deeper. It was such a perfect opportunity to further develop the relationship between Lucas and Riley, romantically and as a friendship. The show relied so much on the importance of friendship with Riley and Maya, I feel like they forgot about the other characters.

Oh and let's not forget the amazing inspiration from the hallucinogenic talking tator-tot....(sarcasm hand raised so high it actually slapped an astronaut)

reply

that first point was 100%. Everything was way too cookie cutter and happy-go-lucky, I've seen more realism with friendship and family on Rugrats :'D. Gmw was like, Disney junior a lot of times.

even the one girl who said she didn't like riley in gmshedontlikeme ended up liking her. it's like why couldn't she stay the way she was and not like Riley like Missy did, that is more realistic than anything. Like when Riley approached her at the end and told her that she liked her still, they could have had it where the girl rolled her eyes and walked away saying whatever. Instead she smiled as if she was impressed or like she was saying maybe Riley isnt so bad after all. That's not realistic, people don't just change it up like that. You can be super nice and kind like Riley and people will hate you for that very thing, they should have shown that side of the world.

It's just little stuff like that that annoyed me with Girl Meets World. I stopped watching a long time ago but the only reason I know about some of the episodes is because of Instagram. Just seeing Clips show me that they were still crying every other minute and everything was still cutesy

reply

I think it was a little of all of the above.

The christmas episode of season 1 was among my favorite. The ski trip in season 3 was a good one.
