Having the old cast in this new trilogy was a hindrance not an asset.

While it was nice to see Han Solo one last time, but his inclusion along with Leia, and Palpatine had no place in this new trilogy. It just bogged the story down paying lip service to them. Especially to Leia, and her Mary Poppins scene. That was stupid, then somehow it was implied she was a Jedi warroir in training too, WTF? With a lightsaber no doubt... they said she was a commander of the Resistance... ok, but Jedi warrior too? Then she dies and has her Jesus Christ corpse disappearing act... They should have NOT included the old cast... and NOT brought back Palpatine... shouldn't have killed off SNOKE and kept him as the main villian, and let the NEW younger cast shrine unhindered by the oldie cast. I'm done with Star Wars.

I tend to agree. Including the old crew and doing a trilogy of plot rinse and repeat plus added nostalgia films may have been the easiest and safest way to go but it produced films that at their heart were hollow and unsatisfying.

Better, but harder, would have been to strike out in a new direction and produce something fresh and original (as far as Star Wars goes anyway). I liked the idea of Rey and Kylo being Dyads of the Force for example and that could have been something they focused on more and fleshed out.

reply

Totally agree. I really did not want them there. For that reason and for the fact that some Uber nerd fans would only focus on that. Which they did and continued to complain about their treatment. The producers tried to appease them and it made it a bigger mess. They squeezed too much into the last film. A little too late imo. I wild have liked to see more interaction between Rey, Finn and Poe during the whole trilogy instead we got it forced in the last film.

Listening to Han and Leia talk about things they already knew was some of the worst exposition I have ever heard. They were basically breaking the fourth wall

reply

The way they were used, yes. I agree.

This trilogy had the old characters still fighting the old fight, but no longer was it their story. That doesn't make any sense. If it's still Palpatine, then it's still Luke, Han, and Leia's fight - not Rey, Finn, and Poe's. So then there's a conflict from a fundamental story aspect.

reply

Dude, you hit the nail on its head. Bringing back Palpatine for the surprise reveal was desperate. Yeah... totally agree WTF is Leia still doing hanging around the Resistance, it isn't her fight anymore.

"and let the NEW younger cast shrine unhindered by the oldie cast."
Fuck off, the "new younger cast" shine about as brightly as a broken lightbulb.

reply

Sure was. So was trying to adhere to the trilogy formula. They should have just started cranking out "saga" movies organically and let the story unfold however it needed to. Cause what really needed to happen was one big nostalgia "gettin the gang back together for one last ride" movie with the old timers, then you start your new trilogy with the kids.

It was the last trilogy of the Skywalker family saga so the problem wasn't the original cast. Bad writing and incompetent storytelling were the movies downfall. What a mess!

I'm done with Disney Star Wars.

I tend to agree; the inclusion of the OT cast did nothing to help; in fact by trying to find a way to forcefully include them no matter how unnaturally they fit into the story probably did a good deal of damage; but then again the story was so bad nothing really fit in well.

It is not a problem of including the OT but it is how they should have done it. What we got was like the worse possible combination of all scenarios.

I think the worse offense is bringing back Palpatine; as bad as the Sequel trilogy has been it did not really 'undo' anything from the original. Bringing back the Emperor undermines the climax of the OT.

reply

Mostly agree with you, but I felt nobody knew what to do with the old cast for the entire trilogy.
