(SPOILERS!!) - They tremendously wasted the opportunity for Sith Rey

Rey turning to the dark side would have massively improved the movie and saved this trilogy. She didn't even need to be related to Palpatine, just that she would have force pulled and crashed her parents' transport when she was a child, similar to what she did in this movie. This movie should have been about her collapse to the dark side. Would be a much more interesting movie, it would mirror Kylo Ren/Ben Solo story and give some reason for her being so overpowered in TLJ. What do you think?

reply

I definitely would have had Rey fall to the dark side. I would have put a lot of good story in these movies to get her there. I mean, if they truly have no future projects in mind for the character, who the hell cares? Also, it might inspire a whole generation of young women to become bad girls which would be brilliant. But i'd have Rey fall to the dark side, while Ben redeems himself, and they end up just kind of switching places, still locked in the forever struggle. Balance of Force maintained.

I had another thread here with some ideas, if you wanna check it out:

Until the part we found out Chewbacca was not actually dead, i was really enjoying the way things were going. After the movie ended i came home and outlined some ideas in a relatively short time, and i believe mine would make a better storyline. It's baffling how they can do so many things wrong, given the budget, access to resources and ideas these guys can have.

reply

They came right out and said how they were making the movie. They where shooting scenes and ideas left and right, assembling this picture like a choose your own adventure story.

reply

I wish they released all the scenes so someone could make an edit like in PT or OT.

reply

Never happen. Other studios do that fun stuff. Disney always locks it down forever.

reply

I think it's better in the way it is..it is nice to see that Rey remains as a Jedi..

reply

Word. That final scene with her is great, and I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.

So wasted opportunity? Nah.

reply

They already did a better version of that final scene, like, 40 years ago. The other way around, it would at least be something different.

reply

It was a homage obviously -- and I for one thought it was effective.

At any rate, seeing her hold that lightsaber at the end alone> Sith Rey. And FYI, I do find the idea of Sith Rey interesting, but I’m pleased with the way things ended for her character. Btw, given that aside from Empire I was never the biggest fan of the original trilogy, I just can’t say I felt this “inferior” homage in ROS was uninspiring. I greatly appreciated it.

reply

I agree, seeing as they kept her in the light side, that was a peaceful scene to wrap her story.

reply

If such a switch needed to happen it should have happened in the 2nd film which might have influence Keylo/Ben to revert back but it was more important for Disney/Rian to wipe Luke out of the story and prove to the world that "The Force is Female" in this age.

reply

That's a good idea! The first movie should also be a bit different too. Instead of that dumb Starkiller plot, they could move forward faster, reveal a more believable reason for Ben Solo to succumb to the dark side, and make him meaner and scarier. Luke was scared, we too, should have been. Second movie would show Ren's conflicts, attachment to mother as we've seen in TLJ, and then it could link to our version of TRoS.

Sadly, 2nd film ruined a lot of things (i mean, we have SEEN Luke freakin' Skywalker, milking tittie monster!). After that point, it was really difficult to save this storyline. Had they gone the dark side, it'd at least be exciting and something fresh.

It seems they did listen to some of the fan bickerings. It's too bad fans whine and squabble over insignificant things.

reply

Yeah, because having a fantasy film with a plot that remotely follows the rules of its own universe is insignificant.

reply

What i mean is, people mostly complained on Rey being a girl and being so Mary Sue and such. Instead of idiotic plot points like single kill-switch battlestations, Las Vegas dog racing scenes, a plumber almost defeating Darth WideBoi in lightsaber duel.

reply

I didn't hear fans complaining that she was a girl, I heard them complain that she was way overpowered relative to her experience, and overpowered relative the rules of the universe established in the previous films.

Of course, that was until the Lucas Story Group went full retard and made her a God in IX, and removed all doubt.

Nerdy fanbois have always had a soft spot for strong gurls or a dominatrix, as long as their characters make sense within that world.

Rey was never a Mary Sue. Mary Sue has posters of Rey on her bedroom wall.

reply

Plumber was way overpowered, nobody complained. OT had totally idiotic, unbelievable moments, ever-missing stormtroopers, non-existent fail-safes, furry bears in humid rain forest planet. PT had already greatly expanded force powers, lightsaber duels, yet nobody complained.

We have to admit, force had to be way more than we saw in original trilogy to be significant in this technology-filled universe. Fans were bickering over petty stuff, while everything else was ruining Star Wars.

reply

Yep, Plumber was OP'ed, but we must listen to different podcasts, I heard plenty of people complaining about his misuse and under-use.

The Jewdi had yet to fall in the PT. Once fallen, knowledge and training was lost by the OT, Luke was to rebuild it.

reply

wasn't there a rumour a while back that itd be revealed Rey killed her parents as a child force pulling their ship (as seen in TFA) and it crashed? so it mustve been rewritten for chewie

but the idea of Rey finding out shed killed her parents (and could've still been a grandchild of Palps) could've tilted her toward the darkside ...then Ben (after hed turned good) has to take her down ..

reply

Yeah, that was after the 2nd movie i think? Was such an awesome idea, and sits well with how impressed her memory of that single incident was. Also would fit nicely at the darkness Luke saw in her and such.

reply

I'd never heard that one. It would have been an interesting thread to follow.

reply

I wonder if that fan theory was the reason they changed it to... this? If so, such a shame. Nobody ever really dies in TRoS, which makes sacrifices and losses feel weightless. Hell, they might have even brought back Han Solo.

reply

Yep, agreed.

I would have liked them to pursue that, because it would have explained so much about her character. A trauma like that is bound to create a psychological break in a child, and would have explained many aspects of Rey's character that were just bizarre to me.

However, the whole 'killing your parents' thing is a little deep & dark for a target market of kids.

reply

It's too bad that decision makers are almost never enthusiasts of the topic they are deciding about.

reply

Nope, they aren't, the decision makers are almost exclusively no talent drones.

reply

If they were going to have her turn to the dark side for real, it should have been in the second movie. Or the first act of the third.

But I really dont think it would have worked, Daisy Ridley is just so darn likeable nobody could believe she was going to stay there.
