People get too caught up in the whole "Episode" thing in the title.

These new films have absolutely nothing to do spiritually nor creatively with the originals. You're right to say just ignore the rest. If you just ignore the "Episode" thing and just view them as another take on Star Wars - like we do with comic books / comic book films endlessly rebooting themselves and their universes - then they're not so bad. You can just view them as a poorer reinterpretation of the storylines.

Yup. Calling this the end of the "Skywalker Saga" and more simply just calling it "Episode IX" of anything is the biggest trick Disney can pull.

But to their credit it is a good trick - I still read idiots saying stuff like "well you know, TFA was a complete ANH rip off and TLJ is the worst Star Wars ever but I guess I'll go see this just to see how it finishes" 😂 Disney bought the copyright on the kool-aid and some people just can't help but keep sucking it up!

This right here. I've seen numerous people offline who said: "These films have been terrible! But, yeah--I'll probably be buying a ticket to see how it ends".

These same people complained after seeing each movie--especially after The Last Jedi.

From what I understand, people feel "obligated" to watch it.

If people have to watch it, they should do it for free and not contribute money to this nonsense. My wife and I watched TLJ for free last year. Disney hasn't been getting our money for Star Wars since The Force Awakens. Never again will we be suckered into paying for this nonsense.

People should buy a ticket to Jumanji and walk into Rise of Skywalker if they just must see it in theaters. This way, Disney gets no profit for their curiosity.

I can't, really, Sivagish: Lucas' endless revisionism makes it impossible. If I could see the original three with no Special Edition stuff, that would be grand. I wonder if that DVD release is still doing the rounds? Otherwise, I can't see any other way (legal or otherwise) to do it.

For me, I can't. Maybe in a decade but for now--the old films are tarnished and I can't separate them from this appalling Disney crap. I can't. I tried. We rewatched the original trilogy one more time after The Last Jedi and it just wasn't the same. It was depressing. The Disney Trilogy ruined the fun, knowing where the old characters all wind up. What a horrible way to end their legacies. I can't just blot that from my mind while watching those films. I've tried.

Not true. Annihilation was great. Ex Machina was great. The Expanse is great. There is plenty of SF fantasy to explore and be astounded by. Waiting for a good Tschai series (Jack Vance)

I've been watching National Lampoon's Christmas vacation since I was a child. I'm in my mid-30's now and a lifetime of watching that movie has yet to grow old for me.

I've been watching Willow for three decades as well--still not old.

I can say the same for Die hard, Lethal Weapon, Home Alone--classic after classic after classic. None of them grow old.

New films like the MCU have become my modern "Star Wars".

Your claim is false. Disney soured the old movies by shitting on them. It's that simple.

Not really.... give it another 10-15 years. I thought the same thing in my mid 30's. I was rediscovering lots of stuff. I rewatched the OT and still found it enjoyable. I still do on a certain level today but I can also see how it's not all that great a trilogy.

As for enjoying new stuff. I most certainly do. But I also realize that MY new modern classics will never evoke the nostalgia feelings of Star Wars as I get older because I will be dead by the time they are old films to be nostalgic about....😂😂

I know you don't believe it now. But once you hit and pass the 40 threshold things just aren't the same. For example. Have a bunch of friends who were video game freaks up to their 30's and almost ALL lost most of their interest once they turned 40.

Same with movies and TV. Things start to wear a bit thin. Sure I like superhero stuff also but they have done so many movies and TV shows now they are really no longer interesting to me. I have moved back to quality dramas and tv shows.

I'm providing you examples of your assertion not being true. Hell, my FATHER is in his 60's and still enjoys the old Star Wars as much as he did back then. Your example isn't universal. Sure they were magical when I was a kid but as I have gotten older watching the old ones, sure brings back a bunch of nostalgia when I was a kid but overall I think the movies are just mediocre. They are extremely simple and really do not have much depth beyond the special effects ...

Some of the best movies of all time have had a simple and even silly premise. I don't think it's fair to call a film mediocre on that basis alone.

Exactly.

These kind of movies represent a break you take, a moment you just let it go. When you have to be paying attention to how they try to inject their agenda to evangelize you... that just screws the momentary feeling of abandonment, which is the biggest (lost) asset in those movies.

And I don't see that this can be easily recovered. At the end of the day, it's a matter of TRUST: you let the writer guide you, compel you, drive your emotions... and you expect in return that he won't use it to sell any gospel. Once the trust is lost... it's damn hard to recover it.

There are two options:

1. Everything becomes boring sooner or later. Your favorite movie, your favorite music, your favorite girlfriend... there's a moment when it's not the same as before.

2. The franchise has been burnt out. Even though the original movies haven't been changed... its narrative universe has. One basic element in storytelling is the ability to keep immersion, to make you feel that those characters are real, that they live in a fantasy but someway real universe. The more the franchise becomes a joke, the more you are aware that the characters are just puppets and the universe depends on the whim of the writer, the more difficult is to maintain the immersion... even in the old movies.

You're feeling this way because the Disney Trilogy has soured you on Star Wars. What you're feeling is entirely normal. My wife and I were both major Star Wars fans for years. They were our favorite films of all time, really. My wife actually had tears in her eyes when that Star Wars logo came up when we sat down to watch The Force Awakens for the first time. I got goosebumps when it came up. NO OTHER movie has ever done that to either of us.

Disney has soured that.

In time (with a lot of distancing from this trilogy in between) you will re-discover your fondness for it. Might take a while, but it will happen.

My wife and I made it a Christmas tradition to rewatch the original trilogy annually. This year? Nope. Last year? Nope. Disney Star Wars trilogy did that to us.

Now, the fans of this trilogy will just say: "Then stop watching the new movies and just watch the old ones! Pretend the news ones don't exist!"

I can't. There is only so much I can push from my mind. It's difficult to watch the old films, knowing Han, Luke and Leia all three wind up miserable failures and all three die alone, apart from each other. It's hard to watch Return of the Jedi knowing Anakin's salvation was in vain as Palpatine is "Still alive, don't ya know".

It's soured.

Only a complete de-canonization of the Disney Star Wars trilogy could remove that sour taste.

No, I did NOT enjoy Rogue One and never once claimed I did. Where are you getting that from? I found that film to be boring, the characters flat and the only good scene to be the infamous Vader scene. I also never said I enjoyed Solo. Again, where are you getting that from? I called it a horrible movie while praising the Han Solo performance. Don't twist and spin what I said. That's another classic troll tactic.
