I'm just wondering cuz thematically it would be fitting to end the Skywalker saga in a climactic Lightsaber I didn't mind the Praetorian Guard showdown since it was to setup Reys and Kylo Rens going to into Episode IX and they doubled down on his allegiance to the dark side I also Imagine Abrams will be making his version of TLJ so I hope so
Because I'm afraid that they'll try to have Rey redeem him through love the way Luke redeemed Vader. Which would suck because it's Abrams-level derivative, because it'd make Ren into a weakling who does whatever the nearest person tells him to do, and because it'd seem like the murder of Han Solo meant nothing. I'm not having any fucking redemption!
It would almost be poetic if they forced Harrison Ford to come back with some hidden contractual obligation. They could make him get killed by Kylo Ren again. I'll bet Kylo Ren gets killed in slow motion by remote control the same way Snoke got killed, and Kevin Bacon got killed in X-men: First Class. It makes an epic battle much easier to write, and if someone whiney screams about how terrible it is then there might be an emotional response...in silly teenagers.
She already beat him twice. So, it's obvious she's going to beat him again. Don't you know that strong empowered women are better at everything than men!
Why would he even fight her? She beat him with zero (absolute zero) training and then schooled him and the royal samurai after she trained herself for 10 minutes with Luke ... (which was only a day or so later)
What a total rehash that was. Just like Luke taking down a Death Star then defeating Darth Vader, all with virtually no training. Almost as if these characters have some magical force greater than them guiding their actions. Poppycock, I say!
Revisionist in what way? And as for the issue never being raised, well, that's just a sexist double-standard, right? Rewatch Star Wars and notice that within a few minutes of learning that Jedi and the Force exist, Luke is running around the Death Star, and within a matter of hours has blown the thing up.
You're pretty idiotic in your replies, so I am now convinced you're just trolling, but for what it's worth re-read what I wrote. The gist is that neither is a "Mary Sue." The conceit of the Star Wars narrative is that The Force exists, and guides those in whom it is strong. That's why Luke could do so much without any knowledge or training, and why Rey, though better-trained than Luke, was also a natural at harnessing the powers of The Force.
Sorry but your argument was debunked almost 4 years ago (and never raised in 40 years) - which is why I find it comical that you're trying to clutch onto it as a defensive strategy for the poor writing of the rey character.
Every one of your points is untrue or blatantly disingenuous. You are trying to generate a false equivalence between rey and Luke when non exists - entirely self serving and only to suit your flawed narrative.
What you call my argument is a factual summary of the plot of Star Wars. As for why it was never brought up before is, as I wrote, because when a male character goes from zero to hero in a day's time, it's just another Hollywood story. When a female does she, she's a Mary Sue.
I challenge you to rewatch Star Wars and tell me how much time passes from the moment that Luke, a farm boy untrained in any form of combat, learns that The Force exists and the moment that he masters it enough to pilot a fighter jet and out-fly Darth Vader, and make a 1 in a trillion shot that takes down the Death Star. Spoiler alert-- the answer is "a few hours."
ERROR - I'm afraid you are incorrect. You cite sexism where none exists - Likely with the expectation that it will shut down any alternate point of view (a form of bullying).
If people hated female characters (which is a massive lol btw since that notion is total bs) then there wouldn't be any successful female action characters - clearly there are.
1) Luke is a trained pilot, you even see his ship in the film + other characters vouch for him (ie; exposition). rey FULLY admits that she has barely any experience flying and after being crazy good in the MF after a 5 second learning curve is super excited at now being an expert and is expressing this with finn after the outwit and destroy the resistance Tie Fighters. She is even main pilot of the MF hours later at the end of the film over Chewy ...
2) He does not outfly Vader, Vader is actually 1 second from destroying him when Han intervenes and saves him - deliberate overstatement in order to suit your narrative. Have you actually seen ANH?
3) Luke was able to use the force to assist with the shot with LITERAL HELP FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE in Obi Wan Kenobi ... So still doesn't do it by himself. Should we list what force abilities rey performs in tfa alone? For no apparent reason other than the fact that a board room knows that they are 'items that key demographics would identify with as part of the Star Wars(tm) brand' ...
If what you're saying is true then there would be loads of characters that would be getting called Mary Sue's over the last few decades ... but the list is very small. There is a reason for this and that reason is because the term is in relation to characters and script, not gender.
It's an OLD AND TIRED strategy because you can't accept that a character in the film warrants criticism. It seems that you only care because of the characters gender? Seriously? What a joke you are if that is the driving force behind you retconning your own memories.
If they literally went back in time and remade ANH with a Lucy instead of Luke, I'd have no issue with the film at all. If they made rey a Ronald then I would still have the exact same concerns with tfa.
I feel like the fight will be similar to their TFA fight. He will overpower her for dramatic effect, seemingly having the upper hand, and then she will make an intense comeback to beat him. Except I think this time she will persuade him to turn somehow.
