This movie has grossed $1.3 billion worldwide
How is that considered a failure?
shareFinancially, it's a huge success. The visual effects were impressive and the score was terrific.
On every other count it was a disaster.
Like I said in a previous post:
Box office are financial numbers. If you look at the week-to-week drops, its huge. Which means people arent coming back to the movie and are telling their friends it sucked. It keeps dropping because people dont care anymore. Which means nothing for TLJ, but EVERYTHING for the movies following it.
If people lose interest in SW because they are pissed off at TLJ, they wont be coming in hordes for Solo or episode 9. You can trow me the total box office in my face all you want, but it doesnt matter. What matters is the week-to-week drops that indicate the hype has been killed and people generally dont care anymore. Pair that with the massive backlash (believe me, the backlash is huge, you can tell yourself all you want and live in the happiness bubbel, but its true) and Disney DOES have a huge problem. SW is only as big as its fans. It could suffer the same fate as the Star Trek movies. Where people just don't show up anymore.
If you piss off all the fans (or a huge part of the fans) you will kill SW. The hype is generated by its fans. People that go to conventions, talk about it and advertise it. The fanbase kept SW alive 40 years and counting. So yeah, it made loads of money. But that isnt the problem. Transformers also makes loads of money. But when people stop caring, that money will eventually drop and SW will not be the money maker it once was. We will see this in Solo en Episode 9. So you can call TLJ a succes all you want, but the future of SW has never been this fragile.
I don't know of anyone that is calling it a failure. Anyone that would make such a claim is delusional.
But I also would not call it a huge success. With a difference of over $750 million from TFA...a mild disappointment feels more apt. It covered its production and marketing requirements and managed to put a couple hundred million in its coffers at the end of the day. In comparison...TFA put approximately 1.25 billion in the coffers at the end! Now that is a HUGE success!!! And like any juggernaut of success...it raised the bar...TLJ fell way short of that. TFA netted almost as much as TLJ grossed...still not a failure, but hardly a run away success either.
Because it was that bad it will proberbly have a huge knock on effect for future movies, I can't imagine the new trilogies making any where near 1 billion , people will skip them as long as Rian the hack Johnson is involved
shareFinancially it's done fine. Just wait til the Han Solo movie comes out, I think that will be the biggest financial failure in the Star Wars franchise.
But back to this, it just seems like the biggest audience failure in the franchise which is tough to fathom knowing that episodes 1 and 2 exist.
I'm trying to go for an entertaining, informative youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any thoughts or criticisms, i'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. Review right here- https://youtu.be/nerCnafPUm8
