So It Flopped In China Too

Opened below Rogue One. Maybe 50m+ total , less than half than TFA.

Oh, looming. I like that word. Looming. Sometimes I even lurk or skulk like Hugh Grant.

And i thought the asian market love this movies...

reply

No...the chines fucking hate them...Japanese is a different story...don't know about Koreans...Chinese especially do not like American movies that do not feature a strong Chinese cast and if you do cast a Chinese character...might not want to put them into a romantic position with a black dude...they really don't like that!

reply

I think i messed up with another franchise.πŸ€”My bad,sorry.

reply

No need to apologize to me...until TFA I figured the Chinese would love Star Wars...who knew? Well...like more than a billion people knew it, but you know what I mean.πŸ˜‰

reply

The Chinese do enjoy some American movies, they make up quite a few of the top grossing films there even without having major and even minor Chinese cast members. I don't believe they are quite as moved by the any Asian will do philosophy of western diversity lovers.

reply

I don't believe Tran is Chinese, but actually Vietnamese. So I am not sure she would have ticked up their interest regardless of her forced relationship with Finn.

reply

Then refer to criteria A...they don't like it with no Chinese representation. Don't take my statements fully in jest...much has been written on the struggles the film industry has faced where pleasing a Chinese audience is concerned...and to be fair...I do not recall if the particular offence was lack of Chinese or south East Asian as a whole...

reply

I think the Chinese market can be difficult in part because they have such a robust industry of their own, its just one of those hit or miss kind of things. Prominent Chinese representation may help but I don't think its guarantees anything.

reply

Absolutely!!! And I never claimed it to be a good plan or approach...just stated it to be the one they are trying LOL! My personal advice to anyone trying to express creativity...try to avoid the committee...and if a committee is the only route...seed it with quality stock that would promote artistic expression rather than consolidate the liquidity of a property for maximum exploitation. Star Wars has become the poster child for the woes of amalgamation and capital...

reply

It's not that huge of a loss, tbh. Studios only get 25% there. Much better for it to be a hit in most other parts of the world.
