So happy that...

all our questions had satisfactory answers. I mean for a minute there I thought JJ just threw a bunch of unexplained plot lines together knowing somebody else would have to deal with it.

But no.

We got a totally coherent 2nd part and can't wait for IX. Just think about it - we'll finally get to see Rey overcome her flaws and get revenge on Kylo whilst saving the three other rebels who aren't dead.

Can't wait.

you have got to be kidding right? JJ made the next story appealing , who is snoke, who is rey, who are the knights of ren? Rian Johnson destroyed all that and instead gave us some comic book star wars movie that wanted to be different, well it was , and it was crap

reply

JJ didn't 'make' anything. He doesn't make things - he takes things other far more talented people have created, drains them of what made them unique in the first place before shrink wrapping them for mass consumption.

Yes - he left plot points dangling but plot points that were going nowhere and came from nowhere. You know he literally calls his 'style' mystery box right? I mean, it kinda works - 'what's in the box'? It's an interesting question, we all want to know the answer but posing the question is easy! It's answering it that's hard. See Lost. See the Last Jedi. See any fucking thing this hack has touched.

Is Super 8 OK?

reply

No.

See 'Stranger Things' for how to rip off that Joe Dante feel properly.

reply

Yeah, I prefer the IT movie and Stranger Things for my 80s childhood nostalgia/adventure fix.

reply

I loved IT. Really nailed the 80s atmosphere - I just wish they'd cut out some of the crappy CGI (especially as most of it was good).

reply

Can you mention the specific CGI bits?

reply

The one that really stuck in my head was the first scene where ITs mouth extends and reveals his teeth (when he's in the drain). That looked very fake and - for me - really undercut a fantastically creepy sequence.

reply

Yeah, others have mentioned this. The way I see it, with that moment, is that Pennywise can grow teeth quickly in all directions, so whilst the visible top teeth didn't do anything (except perhaps terrify Georgie, as intended) there were teeth underneath that clamped on and ripped his arm off.

Notice how he goes to eat Eddie (the boy with the broken arm) - he opens his mouth and teeth erupt that are like those of some kind of piranha or something, in all directions. Or when he opens his mouth to the girl and the entire inside of his body is lined with downward-pointing teeth.

Don't forget, Pennywise is a shapeshifter, and is sometimes the clown in human form, but he can change into anything frightening to his prey almost instantly.

reply

Well this is a bit OT for TLJ but yes, I get that, no problem with teeth shooting out everywhere, I just thought it looked like CGI. They should have either gone practical, or just done a better job. Like they did in 95% of the film. Still good though. I just don't get how some bad effects scenes can slip through like that (though I realise it is subjective).

reply

Well, I'll end this post by saying that real actors were used for the painted lady and the leper (with CGI augmentations), Pennywise's independent eye movements were real (Bill Skarsgard can do that), the drool was real, and I read that Bill was also a contortionist (coming out of the fridge), although that 180-degree twist was CGI. It was also a low-budget movie, so maybe some of the stuff isn't perfect. Eddie's broken arm, I think, is too long, even though it's a prosthetic attached to the actor's shoulder - I can't believe they didn't spot that sooner.

reply

But yes I was joking. TLJ is a load of crap - you are right there - but RJ was painted into a corner by JJ. Though I have to confess that even saying that I'm surprised at just how crap TLJ was.

reply

Amazing posting :) . BTW Are you sure about this three rebels left? Havent one died cause of escape sress?

reply

They almost died but it turns out Rey is an excellent paramedic/trauma councillor so she saved the day.

reply

reply
