Another first brought to you by TLJ...

Flashbacks???? We've had a dream sequence(shudders) and we've seen a force vision...which was way cool as I always wondered what Luke experienced on dagobah...but a straight up flashback to tell a story from the past...never been done in Star Wars...and should have stayed that way! Lazy uninspired narrative device? Opportunity to showcase de-aging capabilities? Or just another attempt to give Luke fuck all to do? I'm going with a little of A,B and C...

Flashbacks - so hot right now.

But seriously, flashbacks are used when you cannot attach people emotionally to every word and sentence said in the movie, so you have to feed pretty pictures to the retards. Let's remember Obi-Wan telling Luke about thousands of generations and fall of his father. No flashbacks needed.

You know Lando, anything made before the OT is a prequel and Disney is making 3 prequels. I wonder what the prequels haters think about this.

where? In AOTC we see a dream sequence....I remember no flashbacks however.

I'm a Skywalker purist so I've yet to see R1...I will see it but not until I have a better idea where Disney is taking the franchise...dark times indeed!

reply

R1 is on its own. Not perfect, but better than ST. Adults will appreciate it better. But it has plotholes.

"Dark times indeed".

Yeah...things were going swimmingly before Disney bought Lucasfilm.

:p

reply

It was fine for EU and artistic freedom. Now we have smiling fascists at the helm.

reply

"Smiling fascists" making movies about the Resistance. So much name-calling, so little thought.

Well enough to warrant a 4+ billion dollar price tag...

reply

[deleted]

Wait...you mean the movies themselves are flashbacks?

reply

I think that's what landofree meant.

based on that...logic?...TFA made the OT a flashback.

reply

[deleted]

Then all that's left for Episode IX is a flash-sideways.

reply

[deleted]

hmmm, maybe flash-diagonal, because it still moves forward a bit

A flashback is visual so probably fits in to the action oriented type movie and helps convey why Mark feels the way he does and the memories he has of that encounter with Ben Solo.

reply

Never needed to use this lazy approach in 40+ years...just saying...show it to me in a force vision...those have been with us since 1980...

reply

You mean Luke would appear in a vision of Rey's and she would see directly for herself what happened?

reply

Sure...why not...or just tell the background sans visuals...you know...like every Star Wars film prior to TLJ...

reply

Flashbacks are neither good or bad depending on their use. This is a just another straw man argument being used to convince themselves and others that their "reaction" has some objective validity.

reply

Much like narration...Flashbacks are niether good nor bad...unless in Star Wars...where stories have been told for four decades without employing them. There is nothing straw man about wanting to honor Star Wars tradition...I've a bad feeling belongs...flashbacks do not...

reply

Nice limiting, stipulative requirements in the name of "tradition". Do you like to keep your personal life so small and narrowly defined? It makes you feel safe and secure when things stick to your definition of "tradition", doesn't it.

reply

I have high standards...they are rigid...they do also apply to my personal life so...sure!!! As far as what makes me feel safe and secure...never really gave it a thought...I'm not a millennialšŸ˜±

reply

It's fine.

reply

Exactly! Fine...ok...alright...mediocrity!!! It used to be great....

reply

I agree : it's lazy, unnecessary and I didn't want it in a Star Wars movie.

reply

Thank fucking christ!!! Atleast I ain't alone...here I thought Star Wars fans had standards...finding most to be fucktarded...good screen name! THeShogunOfYonkers will dig that!
