Friday Box Office numbers are in - Oh boy!

Friday Box office numbers were just released and TLJ only did 24 million.

As a comparison, TFA did 49 million and R1 did 22 million on that same day.

Clearly a large portion of the fanbase hated it and bad WOM is spreading. Far fewer repeat viewings than TFA.

Congratulations Rian Johnson & Kathleen Kennedy! You have truly divided the fans!

But that would imply Rogue One was largely hated as well, which doesn't seem to be the case.

At least Jumanji didn't beat it yesterday.

reply

Now no one expected TFA numbers again, but a movie with Luke Skywalker should not be struggling to make what R1 (a movie with unknown characters) did at this point, unless a part of the fanbase hates it and isn’t coming back.

Rogue 1 certainly wasn't well received. Most admit it was an okay film with a really exciting bit at the end that carried the whole film.

But yes, they saved Luke for part 2 for a reason. The "Return of Star Wars" hype was always going to be a bar that wouldn't be met again anytime soon. That's why they didn't blow their Luke-wad on that film. People were going to see it regardless. Holding Luke back for the sequel should have brought near epic box office again. But it did not. Cause this was a Luke none of the old fans want to see.

As you say, the return of Luke Skywalker! and finally seeing a grown mature Luke lay down the whoop ass with the Force should not be struggling to match numbers with a wild card film that nobody ever wanted and filled with new characters that would never be seen again and with a known outcome cuz it was a prequel to the most famous film of all time.

reply

Thats because they turned Luke into a woe is me kid killer and no one wants to see that especially in a Star Wars movie. But your right this movie should be beating TFA by a long shot.

The goal is never to divide or make people upset, but I do think the conversations that are happening were going to have to happen at some point if sw is going to grow, move forward and stay vital.

Making Luke a kid killer is not moving forward. They whole heatedly do not understand Star Wars.

What arrogance! Johnson's vision is "grow, move forward and stay vital". No thanks. I was perfectly happy with Lucas' vision and JJ Abrams who at least respected Lucas.

reply

I'm boycotting by not seeing it multiple times. Also I'm not recommending it to people. I liked some aspects but, not Jake Skywalker and Johnson's flippant attitude towards the previous movie and Star Wars lore.

I think that is what you are seeing here fan reaction has not been great. It’s interesting though because they said it got a A cinescore which would indicate it should have held better but it isn’t. There is an article out there showing it’s performing the worst of all the Star Wars films at holding its initial Audience.
