Why didn't they just kill off Leia?

Everyone talked about how the movie gave her character "closure"...she's still alive at the end of the movie..how is that closure? She should have died so we'd have closure for her character, instead we'll get some lame explanation in Episode 9 how she croaked.

They'll use the Poochie excuse.." I have to go now. My planet needs me. "

Well, first of all, they probably had no idea the actress would depart soon after the movie, but I suspect they hadn't intended to kill Leia off. because she's a woman. This trilogy is all about fighting that fascist white male patriarchy.

reply

No, everything I read about the movie talked about how Carrie Fisher's character was given closure in the movie...there was no closure at all.

reply

That reminds me of something I read: The bio of those crystal foxes said that they glowed a bit in the dark, which would help guide our heroes.

That definitely didn't happen.

Here's one quote I found: ""They live within the burrows and within the tunnels beneath the planet," Scanlan added to EW. "So there is a time where their ability to shine within the darkness, should provide a guiding light to our heroes.""

"They are natives of the planet Crait, an old abandoned base of the Rebel Alliance not previously featured in the Star Wars movies. The planet is covered in salt crystals. Living on this planet has caused the native fauna to become covered in crystals themselves. Other details revealed that the creatures also glow in the dark"

She died too closely to the release date, there was no way to overhaul the movie and remove her from the rest. It was deep into post-production last December.

reply

she died in the first act of the flick...avoid the moon walk tripe and just leave her dead! The film would have benefited from that...star dancing? Not so much...

reply

But she would need to be edited out or replaced for all her scenes near the end. That would be very problematic.

reply

More problematic than the chase to run them out of gas? Sorry but I read your review...you and I are on a fundamentally different dimension where this flick is concerned...

reply

Money wise? Yes. Reshoots, rewrites, release date changes, advertising having to be done again, toy releases held back etc etc.

reply

She died LAST YEAR.

reply

Yes, and this movie was in post-production a year ago. All shooting had been finished. Post-production on a Star Wars movie is quite intense, too.\

Changing the movie so that she dies at the beginning would be an overhaul. Removing her from the rest of the movie would be next to impossible.

reply

Then have her die at the end, not still be living so we get some lame-ass story in EP 9 about her death.

reply

She might be kept alive offscreen the way Luke was in TFA. Perhaps she'll be busy working with the remaining Republic and getting them to help clean up the First Order.

reply

Its ok kids Leia went out for a pack of cigarettes she'll be back soon.

reply

You meant a dimebag of coke, right?

reply

I always thought that Leia would end up being the Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic. They could explain it that way.
