Why do we debate?

Hello there!
So you've already made your decision on the last Jedi. You're going to hate it, or you're going to love it. Not only that, but you're fighting with someone who has a different opinion than you. My question is "why"? Why are we sitting at our computers or our phones and arguing about a movie? I mainly debate Star Wars because it left a big impact on me as a child, but I know a lot of people who feel the need to debate it just because it's a popular franchise. Not only that but so many of us here and on other websites are debating movies. Start wars is currently the one we're all really fighting on, yet so many people are getting angry and fighting with each other over movies like this. And that's where I want to go into; why are we spending the time of these movies? I talk about movies because theirs not a lot of people in my area who know movies like I do since i love them and want to talk about them. I've been studying movies since I was 11, and now I'm 19. I'm studying musical theatre, have a part time job as a voice actor, and have a decent life. Yet I don't have many people to talk about movies with. That's where the greatness of the internet comes in, because I'm able to talk and debate movies with people. Yet over the past few months, I've met a bunch of different types of people.
1. Those who hate anything popular and want to destroy it on the internet.
2. People who can't make movies so they bash those who can.
3. Trolls. These people are just fun to watch when you're not the one being trolled.
4. The people who genuinely love movies and want to talk about them.
One thing we all have in common is our love of them, and we want to talk about them. My question to you is, why are you on this website here debating movies? As I've said before, I debate movies because I enjoy them and want to connect with people who do love them. But why are you here debating a fictional world for the movie "the last Jedi"? Why is it somewhat important to us to take some time out of our day and talk about fictional worlds, fictional characters, and if it'll be good or not? I do it because to me, it's so much bigger than a movie and I love talking about this massive story that I've fallen in love with, and those fictional characters feel so real to me. But why are you here? Why is it important to you? Thanks for reading! :)

That is the order you pick? I think #4 is the only one that is mostly applicable. the other 3 are a far far minority. I think you are trying to attribute many people that are #4 to the other 3 because they can be aggressive about the fact they do not like the direction the Disney era star wars is going in.

But people want to talk about things they love and things they hate. Star Wars is a popular franchise, one of the most popular in cinema history, and currently is in the middle of a new trilogy that is very polarizing (which is a result of the rather obvious pandering TFA/Rogue One did). So the why we talk about the film is self explanatory. The why we talk in a love or hate it mentality is because TFA was a poorly written reboot rather than a sequel but because it was new and pandered to modern 'progressive' sensibility those that got pandered to often support it just as aggressively as those that hate it/criticize it.

I mean just the fact there is real discussion about whether or not they will include openly gay characters is enough to light a fire of controversy and discussion.

My question is why ask the question about why people debate films? I get a sense that you don't want people to debate and assume that we all should just like something(that you like) and not discuss the things we do not like. Criticism is an important part of entertainment. The point of it is to fine tune both the audience and the filmmakers to make entertainment of the quality that the audience likes. The only way that can be effective is if a majority of the audience is in agreement. Discussion about a film finds if the majority is in agreement and if the critics are an outlier.

Why talk about a movie we haven't seen? Because we're interested in it, that's why!

People always talk about stuff they're looking forward to, ask a bride about her upcoming wedding if you don't believe me. Just make sure you have a few hours free before you do.
