Why is everybody white ?

I know there are Asians and Africans, S Americanism Caribbeans and more in France, I've seen them and eaten in their cafes etc. Sad to see a really good show ruined by its monochrome - and very good - cast.

I love French cinema and theater, often visit the country but after so much cinema that attacks racism, sexism etc, the lack of non whites is a big let down.

Shame on Canal+

You will find very few people of non-white origin in small rural towns throughout Europe. In any case, as already stated, Thomas, the commander of the local Gendarmerie, is of North African ethnicity.

reply

Anyone with functioning eyesight and a colour TV set will have noticed that "everyone" isn't white - Thomas, one of the main characters of the show, clearly isn't.

Shame on you for expecting a show taking place up in a small secluded town up in the Alps to have the same ethnic mix as big cities. Would you expect to see lots of Africans and Caribbeans in a small town in Alaska just because they are many in New York? France is a big country. The Alps aren't very ethnically diverse. Get over it.

Besides, there are a few characters of foreign origins in the show, such as Thomas, Lucy, Lucho, the Koretzkys...

There was a black nurse working in the hospital as well.

I loved watching the series. The ethnicity of the characters never even entered my mind. I'm sympathetic to your concerns but art shouldn't have guidelines or limitations. No one would ever tell Van Gogh that all of his paintings must have red in them. I wish there were more diversity in film and television but it should be left up to the writers or director. Not forced or required.

ever see that American tv series "Friends"? It took place in NY and you could probably count on your 2 hands how many non-white folks were in it.

so, that's the area in which they lived and worked

I'm watching this on Sundance right now (damn their commercial breaks), Ep. 0105 Serge & Toni and there's at least two black kids in the group of kids that Adèle is telling about the reservoir and the town that used to be there, plus one of the nurses dealing with Lucy is black. So, no surprise on IDMb, the original poster doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

reply

I am glad that at least this series doesn't have the token "foreigner" in and focuses on the atmosphere rather than pandering to a politically correct and insecure audience.

FYI am mixed race and it doesn't bother me. Instead the whites only makes it authentic given the setting.

Shame on you for whining about it on imdb.

Go watch some American trash with the token black, token Latino, token Asian, token Canadian etc etc. Seriously.

And political correctness was in effect with the show by making one of the characters a lesbian, which was not necessary.

reply

What makes you think there were TWO (not one - there was a couple, didn't you notice?) lesbians in the show just for political correctness? You must have a big chip on your shoulder if you think that any gay character in a show is there out of PC tokenism, rather than because gay people are in every community, whether you realize it or not. It wasn't "necessary" to make the two characters lesbian, but it's not necessary to make the other characters hetero, is it? Next you'll be whining about the political correctness of mixed relationships between the living and the dead.

reply

@maverick135

Once again, just because you're mixed-race dosen't mean that your opinion makes any damn sense whatsoever. And why the hell are you saying always claim that having a diverse cast is "tokenism" or "politically correct"? Yet it's perfectly okay to act as if nobody BUT white people exist in the world? That's bull****,pure and simple. Shame on you for even thinking that it's a shame. and quit whining about something being "politically correct" because you obviously don't know what the hell that term really means, anyway. Look it up sometimes before you start whining about it again.

lol @ the replies to this thread. So, the two ways this show could've been is: realistic and all white cast, or multiracial but have "token" nonwhite characters.

Here's a crazy thought: how about characters that are non-white but also not "token" chararacters? Is that too *beep* bizarre for your worldview to handle? What if there were Arab, Asian, Black, Hispanic, etc. characters in this show who were just that, characters? If Adele was the exact same character, same lines and everything, but the actress that happened to portray her was black, would that make her the "token black" character?

I suppose Victor is the "token child character", and Julie is one of the "token female characters", and Thomas is the "token police character".

It's 2013, how much longer are people going to justify shows being comprised of an entirely white cast?

How about colour blind casting? So casting in a country where 95% of the population are "white", which would lead to a casting with approximately 95% of characters being white.

So colour blind casting would lead to approximately what we got... Cool huh?

Personally I'm a fan of colourblind casting (except where a character's race is actually relevant), I'm also a fan of colour blind viewing
