Why is everybody white ?

I know there are Asians and Africans, S Americanism Caribbeans and more in France, I've seen them and eaten in their cafes etc. Sad to see a really good show ruined by its monochrome - and very good - cast.

I love French cinema and theater, often visit the country but after so much cinema that attacks racism, sexism etc, the lack of non whites is a big let down.

Shame on Canal+

It's a really secluded French town- it seems cut off from the rest of civilisation. Maybe this is deliberate?

Ever watched the movie "Amelie"? There are many shots of French streets but NO blacks. The French don't like putting people of other races in their movies. Just like the Spanish, Italians, Greeks and many more; Racism is still very much alive. And this is coming from a Dutch white dude

reply

That's a strange generalisation. The Intouchable, anyone? And that was a huge hit in France! How about 35 Shots of Rum?

At the top of my head I can think of atleast three French movies with non white characters in prominent roles.

1. Special Forces, had a black actor (Djimon Hounsou) as the main character.

2. the Hedgehog "Le hérisson" had an asian character as one of the main characters.

3. "Sheitan" French horror film with an Asian character as one of the main leads.

I've seen Amelie and there isn't racism in that at all. It's one of my favourite films and in the photo book which Amelie finds there are many different nationalities portrayed. One of the men who speak in it is black.
The glass man is Russian as well.
Besides, why should race even matter? It was all about style and the colour of the programme was so fine tuned- everything in pale blue, grey and green. This isn't racism or discrimination at all.

Pathetic Dutch white dude. Go outside. Look around and take a deep breath.
France have a huge multicultural community but not in tiny remote mountain villages. I live in a similar village to the one portrayed in Les revenants and guess what. No black people ! Some come through on holiday but none live here. There is no underlying racial aspect. IDIOT !

You obviously haven't seen "Intouchables" yet.

To a lesser extent add Americans to that list too.

Can't believe people are complaining about lack of races... I have lived in France for many years and shocking as it may seem to some here, there are places where ethnic minorities are very rare. And there are places where there are NO ethnic minorities. I even went to a school in a very big town. No ethnic minorities in the class, and only a handful of Algerian/Moroccan descendent kids in the whole school.

Only ignorant people see racism everywhere, so there is a message from me to you- you are paranoid. Please do not let your ignorance spoil this show for you. If the fact that there are no Arabic/African etc people ruin the plot for you, I can only feel sorry for you.

The setting of the show is somewhere in a valley, most likely the Alps (judging from the vegetation) and it is a fact that these villages/ small towns do not have that much genetic diversity.

My own Y-DNA is the same as the 5,000 year-old mummy Otzi found in the Alps. I'm not bragging, just explaining.

Having said that the head of police is Samir Guesmi, born in Paris of North African origins.

And note that the actress playing Camille, Yara Pilartz, and several other actors/actresses have names pointing to a foreign origin.

The analogy with Amélie is not valid, as Amélie is set in Paris. The Revenants is set in the middle of nowhere, so to speak.

Also, just in case if you missed it, Samir Guesmi who plays the policeman Thomas is of Algerian origin.

That's what I was thinking.

Not all walks of life have to be represented in movies and series, otherwise we'd have nothing but tokenism.

reply

@adco

Who the hell said only white people have to be represented in films and series, as if they're the only people that exist in the whole damn world? What a stupid, lame a** excuse. Easy to say when you're a white person who can see everybody that looks like you in the media. Also, casting actors of color hasn't a damn thing to do with so-called "tokenism", the fact is, we exist in this world too, and have a right to be represented onscreen just like anybody else.

reply

So in a predominantly white country like France, especially in the remote countryside, you'd be happier if there was a random black character, Chinese character, disabled character, character with alopecia, transgender character, Tourette's sufferer character, wheelchair user character, Indian character, dwarf character etc etc? They all deserve to be represented too, but sometimes a story is just a story and doesn't have to include someone to represent everyone, or it just ends up as tokenism.

No, you have no right. You're no Europeans, and so no right to be represented on a European show.

Worse enough that you destroy our continent and culture.

This villiage is the opposite to your banlieue-culture, your true culture and life style.
See the state of the banlieues, and you see all you need to know about people like you.

Attention everyone: Let's not discuss if the lack of racial diversity in a TV show set in a remote town is racism or not and just look at this actual racist comment we have right here.

reply

Does race have to get brought up every time a new show airs? As said above, there are probably plenty of areas in France (probably especially in the more remote areas) where there aren't a big populous of ethnic minorities. Throwing in a token person just for the sake of it is way worse.

It's quite normal for there to be predominately white towns (and let's not forget we only saw a few inhabitants ) - up until recently my town (in England) wasn't very racially diverse, even though areas a few miles away have been for years.

And who knows there's always series 2...maybe there's an undead Chinese family hanging with The Horde

reply

How pathetic to judge a show on the ethnic mix or otherwise of its cast.
In fact, to describe the show as "monochrome" in a strongly negative fashion ("ruined") could in itself be construed as racist. Shame on you.
