Where did Victor/Louis come from? Speculation welcome

I loved the second season and was satisfied about most of the answers they gave. However, we never find out Victor/Louis' (I'll call him Victor from now on) origin story.

Spoilers for those who haven't seen the last two episodes of season 2, if I get a fact wrong, please correct me:

In the finale, 36 years ago we see Lucy show up at Milan's bar, telling him she's waiting for a child. That child is Victor. The earliest we see him in the timeline is when he shows up at Etienne's house to warn him about the dam, while young Berg watches their interaction. He's shooed away by Etienne and goes to the Lewanski's house, knocks on the door and makes himself comfy at the dinner table after Mrs. Lewanski opens the door. He subsequently dies during the house invasion that Pierre took part in.

I feel like I'm missing something, but where did Victor come from originally? Are we supposed to think he's always been around as a "revenant"?

Any ideas would be most welcomed. I love this show, this is the one big question I have.

That whole thing with Victor, and Lucy showing up at the bar, confused the hell out of me. I can't get the timeline down. I thought Milan killed Lucy? But Lucy must already have been dead if she knew about Victor. But why would Lucy have already returned when no one else returned until 35 years later?

I've never been so confused by a show I love so much. I have no idea what is going on, but it's one of my favorite shows.

Lucy, as a character, confuses me. I haven't seen the first season all the way through in a while, but don't we meet her and she's pretty much assimilated into their town?! We didn't know she was a returned then until she came back after being attacked and then we assumed she was returned right? Again, I could be totally muddying that up, because like I said, it's been a long time since seeing those episodes.

But then we find out she's actually from all those years ago and was "originally" killed by Milan. We assume the opening scene of the finale is when she first met Milan and got into town, but then know she's looking for Victor. So, I agree, what gives? Perhaps she's been dead for as much as we've seen of her like Victor? I guess we've been assuming people were alive when they really weren't or something like that....as a whole though, I don't entirely get her character. I fear I may be missing something, I'd love a clear up too!

I realize this has not a ton to do with your initial question. As for Victor, I suppose he's always supposed to be something of a mystery. Less is more sometimes, ya know?

Maybe Lucy is like Victor and Nathan, born from a living parent and returned parent. Not sure if that answers our questions though.

Yes, I think the idea that Victor was born to a living and a returned parent is a good one, but who the heck were they? And what was the timeframe of him being born for the very first time? If he's about 10 when we first see him show up at Etienne's place, was he born ca. 45 years ago or had he been killed and returned numerous times (as when Pierre shot him while he was hiding in the closet)?

Didn't Victor's MoM get killed twice as well? Once in the home robbery and once in the clearing when the circle all killed themselves?

Maybe they will explore that in Season 3. I hope there is a season 3.

I am as lost as everyone above. I guess Victor might be very old and obviously endowed with powers that are unnatural.

As to Lucy - I posted a while ago I am bewildered by her character. As I recall from the 1st season, she had no knowledge of the Returned and was basically having sex while speaking to dead people. She then got attacked by Serge and when she recovered, she seem to be the leader.

In the 2nd season, she turns out to be one of the Returned (maybe more!) and is the vanguard of the Returned, waiting for a young boy (Victor) 35 years ago. So I assume she has been dead for while. And I am unclear - did she come before the Dam broke or afterward?

I guess it's possible Lucy had some sort of undead amnesia haha and didn't remember she had returned? And when she was attacked and came back it kind of jolted her back onto the path we eventually saw her walk down. Although, that seems a pretty big point to just gloss over if that's the case. Man, I really don't know with her, they kind of messy-ed her character up a bit it seems.

Also, she was there before the damn broke because we saw her narrowly escape it with Morgane.

Wouldn't people have recognized this girl who didn't age over these 35 years? At least we know Victor stayed hidden.

She hasn't been around 35 years. Milan killed her and then she showed up again 35 yrs later or thereabouts

Well, how long have the people in the town lived there? The younger ones wouldn't remember her, but perhaps the older ones, if they had lived there at the time. The only one that pops into my mind that would have knowledge of her is Pierre. He must have known something was up long before anyone else if he saw her walking around right?

Do you think it's possible her character underwent some unforeseen changes during the writing process? It's almost like they retconned her a bit to fit her into the grand scheme of things more...but maybe I'm just being really dense here and not thinking things through. Obviously though, I'm not the only one perplexed by her character so something's amiss in general at least.

EDIT: I realize now that Toni and Serge were around then, but maybe they could be kind of lazily excused away as being kids and not really paying attention.

Or maybe they thought it was a girl who just looked like a girl they remembered from 35 years ago. Would you assume a look alike was a zombie from 3 decades ago?

Simon's mom was killed in the suicide cult, not Victor's "mom".

Mrs. Costa even dies three times. Ones when she breaks through the ice, than when she burns in the house of mr. Costa, en at last when she is shot by Frederique.

There's talk on the facebook page about changelings (Victor and maybe Nathan) and water sprites (Lucy).

I'm not sure if I really feel this was the intent, but I don't mind idea of this either.

All in all, I like the conclusion of some stories while leaving much shrouded in mystery. It felt right with this show. I loved it.

(And am I the only one who bawled when Mrs. Costa met up with Mr. Costa?)

I love the scene where Victor walks through the crowd of people gathered at the big hole in the ground. We basically get a recap of all the main characters but it's really sad when Julie walks through the crowd and the look on Victor's face. Great stuff!

I thought Lucy was some kind of medium who arrived in the the 35-years-ago timeline (maybe summoned by Victor), was killed by Milan (and likely part of the Circle judging by the way he commanded her the day the dam broke), and returned in the present day timeline. Or she's an older returned like Victor. Either way, the only thing that confuses me was her present day arrival by bus in season 1. We're led to believe the returned can't leave town, so whatever she is, how did she get out? And why?

He can't be. Julie was either not born or very young in the 35 years ago timeline when Victor was killed at the Lewinsky house.

Unless you believe he time travelled? :P

I suggest Lucy, Victor and Nathan are true eternals.

Lucy and Victor remain the same, even their clothing, throughout all 36 years. There may be some hierarchy between them, as, at the sink hole at the end, Victor tells Lucy that Nathan is like him. Also, when Lucy arrives in town 36 years ago, she says she's waiting for Victor. Frequently, she refers to Victor as though he is her leader.

The last episode also explains why so many of them Return. Victor is so grief-stricken when his chosen father dies, that he demands his father's Return, only to cause every deceased thing around him to Return, including the butterflies mounted in the collection on the wall. These Returned butterflies feature in the opening credits, too. (The idea of every episode opening with the cat trying to kill the same butterfly, again and again, seems appropriate and a bit funny.)

In the closing scenes, rather than suffer grief again when Julie jumps into the sink hole, he re-imagines and thus re-creates her life, but is careful to let all the Returned go. Meanwhile, Lucy takes Nathan to new parents, suggesting Lucy does not need to jump into the sink hole.
