How will this do box-office wise?
Will this strike a nerve with America like American Sniper did and be a smash hit? Or will it be only a modest hit?
Pros:
- Good cast, director and script could lead to positive reactions, which could lead to a good word-of-mouth
- Kristen Stewart has a decently-sized fan base.
- It's coming out Veterans' Day weekend, which could be timely considering the subject matter.
- Oscar nominations could help out the movie later on if the movie doesn't come storming out the gate. The Academy does love Ang Lee.
- Ang Lee is generally a safe bet box-office wise.
Cons:
- Vin Diesel isn't a big draw outside the Fast & Furious franchise. Neither are Steve Martin, Chris Tucker, or Garrett Hedlund.
- The subject matter may actually prevent a good portion of midland America from seeing it, since the book doesn't exactly paint the Iraq War in the brightest light.
- The 120 frames per second may turn off a lot of people. The Hobbit was shot at 48 frames per second and was one of the most criticized aspects of that franchise.
