Can't figure out . . .

Why they (Disney?) would throw away so much good material and (fictional, obviously) history that people knew and loved. I realize they couldn't film the Thrawn trilogy stuff due to the age of the actors involved, but they could have done the post Thrawn stuff involving the kids of the main cast. Maybe it was too familiar? There was no surprise element? Why would Han and Leia name their son Ben? They barely knew the namesake. It made sense when they had the twins and later Like named his son Ben. That made sense! I was looking forward to Mara Jade, Jacen being the Sith lord, Jaina and Ben having to deal with that, etc. I like the movie, I just don't understand why they did it that way.

It was probably being developed for a long time and many avenues explored. Wouldn't be surprised if it was all down to legal and licencing concerns between writers/specific properties/owners/claims. It may have been easier for Disney to simply have a new story written to clear all the hurdles and simplify things from a legal point of view.

The reality of film production often kills dreams and wishes of the fans!

There are things about the Thrawn trilogy that I really didn't like (e.g. ysalamari aka Jedi kryptonite), but it certainly made a lot more sense in terms of the continuation of the Empire as the bad guys vs the extremely half-assed and confusing First Order / Resistance / New Republic story.

There were problems with Thrawn for sure . . . even more so since the prequel trilogy came out.

All of the above... And maybe they just weren't impressed with the material in the SW books (frankly, I never have been thrilled with any of them).

I'm sure they thought their writers could do better, or that their writers could come up with something simpler and more cinematic. If so, I can't say the resulting script was a smashing success.

I heard there were cuts like Vader's palace and how his skeleton was found. I bet they had great material that couldn't be released
