so we know the Chloe story is true because that's the origin of Richard's sadism.
but..

he managed to marry some other woman and have a kid and lead a normal life while practising his newly acquired "hobby" ??
bullshit.

that phone call was unnecessary, the movie was fine without it.

I think that call was needed. It gives a sense of what a pathetic jerk this guy really is when you're actually hearing his family. Too bad we didn't get to see them arrive. I'd love to have seen their reaction to the knowledge. IMO, it was a missed opportunity in the movie.
