perhaps way too early still for me to say but after just about 1 month it's grossed 140 million (it might end up around 200 overall). but that's probably not even enough for it to break even.
so what's the reason? wrong release date? promotion campaign didn't connect with audiences? just another remake/reboot that folks are tired of?
it didn't flop. and it will make buckets of cash in digital/blueray sales.

shareIt can't be 300 with no studio would ok that because he hasn't ever had a film go over 250 and they have been getting less each film. This needed 200 to make it even. It isn't a flop because it still gets shown some places and some close to 200. It still has rental and I think where will get viewed the most. Just get redbox to put a good picture out so won't get buried in with the other rentals. I can't say the reason it was a low viewing. The trailer looked more a comedy than a western. Maybe the uninteresting cast,added with the high cost of movie seeing people didn't think it was more a rental movie at a dollar or spending 20 at a theater.
shareAs much as I liked the movie, it has flopped commercially. The person saying it will make it's money back with Blu-ray and Netflix is delusional.
Personally, I think the biggest mistake they made....at the get-go.....was allowing the budget to be so high. Yeah, I know some of the actors were expensive, but that still does not explain the enormous budget.
They should have taken a page from Clint Eastwood's book. He has made some of the best western films ever made. Wanna know something else about his western's? They were all fairly low budget films. They looked like bigger budget films....but they weren't. This has been his secret all along to a) getting very rich, and b) making the studio very happy, and willing to hire him again, because his films make money.....lots of money.
If this film had been turned in with a reasonable budget.....say, $30 million - $40 million....then the movie would have been a success, and we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Needs to make 170million. Not far from it
shareFlop or not, its mediocre revenue reinforces the Western movie box office handicap. Usually Westerns don't do well, and have a low ROI. And when they are successful, they are never really big, like >$600M.
There are scads of kiddie CGI cartoons making 600, 700M, even $1B+. But Westerns are stuck in the minor leagues BO-wise.
There are Horror movies that make very high profits, with $200-300M take, but which were shockingly low budget. Westerns seem to need fairly big budgets to get >$100M.
As far as I can see, the Western's ROI handicap is not going away, even though they're making a spate of new Westerns lately.

The story is king.
Westerns do NOT need to be high budget. Eastwood made a fortune in his career by making low to moderate budget westerns that just raked in the bucks at the box office. See my post a few panels earlier.
This did not need to be a $90 million film. This could have easily been made for $40 million, with a couple less recognizable names, and wound up being profitable.
Currently the studio is pleased with the movie and the revenue. It's not a flop. I can't wait to purchase my bluray copy.
shareThere was an article about how this was the 6th highest September movie of all time. Do you really think that the producers would spend the money they did on production for a September release if they were not aware of the earning potential for the month it was released?
So, if they are in fact aware of typical september numbers, then I am sure they are pleased with having the sixth best September release in history.
They didn't accidentally spend 90million, and they didn't accidentally release it in September. They calculated, and for their efforts they achieved a stout return. No matter how wonky you do your math, I am confident that the studio is pleased with the results.

It will be interesting to see if Sony green lights any new Westerns in the near future. If they're as pleased as they say they are with their BO from The Magnificent Seven (2016), one could rightfully expect it.

It's an OK movie, but it's a bit weak. Nothing to get excited over. It's not a sequel. It's not based on a popular book or comic. It's not in a popular genre. So it needs to be actually good to be a hit. A mediocre Marvel movie can make lots of money, but a mediocre Western isn't going to make much.
