I don't think it's racist because it's not supposed to be any kind of ACTUAL statement on the people living in the Amazon Basin. It's really just an homage to Italian-made third world cannibal movies.
Similarly though, I don't think it's meant to be some stupid right-wing statement about "social justice warriors". That is just a convenient plot device. Everybody knows college students can be naive and simplistic and even at times be sanctimonious a-holes, like SOME of the more obnoxious characters in this movie. But look at their "critics", who want to round up 15 million people in America who actually work hard (as opposed to sitting on their ass collecting Social Security and disability while watching Fox Mews and whining about how the country is going to hell). They want to dump all these people in Mexico, even though it'll probably destroy several US industries that depend on their labor. Then they're going to build a great big expensive wall along the entire border to stop them from returning and somehow get Mexico to pay for it, which they'll gladly do I'm sure after you send them into major recession by dumping 15 million now-unemployed into their country.
The point is if you're incredibly simplistic and naive, but idealistic, you're a "social justice warrior", but if you're incredibly simplistic and HATE-FILLED and blame all your problems on convenient scapegoats, that's so much better. Makes you wonder who the real cannibals should really be chowing down on.
