Amyl Nitrate AKA poppers!

I have dated people who liked to do it before sex. I hated the stuff, gave me a splitting headache.

It was also common and legal back then at that time. In the Hannibal movies, Lecter gave Mason Verger a popper before Verger cut his face off with a shard of broken mirror.

It is heavily sensationalized in books and movies, because me nor the people I have done it with would ever consider doing any of the things the people in the movies do when under the influence.

I was thinking pcp or meth, I thought maybe "devils rush" was like a brand name...like how bags of H or marijuana strands have names?

"Devils' Breath", Vice News has a great story exploring the origins of the drug (derived from a tree common in Columbia) and how it is used, mostly to impair and assault/rob victims:

But its not called that (Devils breath) in the movie.
Its more likely to be Amil nytrate (poppers) easy to purchase, instant high, only last a minute or so.Devils breath is extremely powerful, even handling the substance could end up getting the dealer wasted. Its not a drug thats been misused much and in the U.S i dont think its been used at all.
As for Poppers, we used to buy it from head shops in Edinburgh but i never liked the dizzy head rush it gave you and headaches afterwards.
Homosexuals use it as its supposed to relax the rear end.
Its proper use was to put a few drops into a saucer of water before bed so when sleeping it kept the heart beating higher. It was for people with heart conditions but was quickly fazed out by newer more manageable drugs.
I remember my friend blocked up his room by putting towels at bottom of the door and sticky tape round the window or anywhere that had a draught.
He emptied a full bottle (15mls) into a saucer, let it evaporate and sparked up a few joints.Said the high was amazing but not my cuppa tea.
