Do you like the Charlize Theron casting choice?

I thought she was the best part of the movie but I never did get around to reading the book. Will have to put that on the list next.

Reviewed the movie here though if you're interest- https://youtu.be/9GDNAN5tr7I

This is what Gillian Flynn said about Theron's casting:

"“I wasn’t remotely concerned that Charlize didn’t look like Libby because she felt like Libby from the second that she got into Libby’s soul,” said Flynn. “I couldn’t care less that she didn’t have red hair.”"

Exactly and it wouldn't be that hard to give her red hair. Not sure why they didn't.

dint read book or plan to, thought she was good. her hat kinda bugged me though haha

reply

Funny you said that because in the last scene in the car she wasn't wearing that hat and I assumed that was indicative of Libby's growth. I didn't read the book either and thought Charlize was fine in the role.

I thought she was very good in this role.i enjoyed the movie also, very dark with very messed up people.no winners in this one.

Personally, I don't think she was right for the part. The whole movie felt like watching a very educated physically well maintained supermodel in street clothes, instead of someone who'd give the impression of having a shattered life like the character had.
Maybe she should have included some personality and/or physical aspects that she used in Monster so the character was more believable.
I like her, but nope: this time I don't think it worked.

Really? I felt like I was watching Monster and not in a good way. I love Monster but didn't want that for this film.

Theron was completely miscast and I love her. However, no matter how much I love an actor's work if that actor is wrong for the role I can't get into the movie.

I have not read the book and knew nothing about it. But it turns out in the novel, she was really short and had lost fingers getting frostbite while hiding on that fateful night.

It's clear to me that this character was extremely scarred by this tragedy and Theron did not reflect that. She only played the character's anger. It was clear to me not even knowing the book, that there needed to be something deeper going on with Lily.

So yeah, I agree. Theron was just wrong.

I may have liked the movie more if I hadn't already read the book but because I had it just didn't work for me. It wasn't just one thing that didn't fit with Charlize Theron...yes the hair color, but also the hair length, the height of the character (which has an important purpose in one of the last parts of the book) - as she was very petite in the book whereas CT is far from. CT is very tall. The timeline was messed up and huge parts of the books were missing so it just didn't work for me.

I would have liked Jennifer Jason Leigh

hard not to see the remarkable bone structure and beauty of Charlize Theron

reply

Jennifer Jason Leigh would have been PERFECT! The character in some ways reminds me of the daughter in Dolores Claiborne (as in a very shattered person), so there you go!

reply

Jennifer Jason Leigh is 53. That would stretching credulity a bit too far imo.

Oh my god no. After Delores Claiborne I could never watch her in a depressing/angry role again.

Okay, I have to preface this to say that I read the book, but haven't seen the movie. However, Charlize Theron isn't even CLOSE to physically resembling Libby from the book. I'll give it a shot, but I was shocked to hear she was cast! I also hope her beauty is pretty toned down, b/c Libby in the book is FAR from glamourous. Oh, and the most important part - her height! Libby's very small stature is critical to the story. Theron's over 5'9"!

Great book, though!! I would highly recommend it!

I would have liked Amy Adams. But I liked Theron too.

She did look like a supermodel trying to look rough. But I don't mind her gorgeous face lol.
