Just watched it. I prefer it to Gone Girl

I'm not saying this because i'm Theron's fan. I think the movie is good. The acting overall is better than Gone Girl. The cast is one of the main reasons making it successful. What i like about it is how it's less stylish than Gone Girl and of course more realistic and believable. Some people may find it boring. To me at least Dark Places only reveals it secret over the half movie while GG's story sounds comic and you don't have to guess because it's already revealed at the beginning. The movie has heart while Gone Girl just leaves me cold.

Now i get why Theron did this movie because it wasn't just relate to her past, it was also for her mom.

Come on. Take your fan glasses off. This movie sucked. It was poorly directed from a mediocre script which only enhanced the faults of the novel. The stuff about Theron is also just your own personal speculation.

Enlighten me! Tell me what are its plot holes/faults?

When i watch a movie i don't care how stylish and polish it is (and i'm talking to Gone Girl). I prefer a movie has stronger and believable story.

Everyone who watches this movie will expect someone who killed the mom and two daughters. I don't think they can guess the mom planned the whole thing to save her children only until they saw her meeting that man. But then her plan turned into a nightmare which she had to witness her daughter got killed by the man she hired and she died after that. She would never know that her other daughter was killed too while her son was arrested for the crime he didn't commit. And her youngest daughter was haunted by that event for the rest of her life. That's a real tragedy to me.

The mom plays an important role in this movie. And how she has to sacrifice herself for her children.

Plus the mom in the movie and Theron's mom both live in the farm and have an alcoholic - abusive husband.

My thoughts exactly... didn't like the direction at all... something was missing from this movie and i am starting to think that it was the budget...
Gone girl was a great movie! Dark, mysterious, just lovely!

It's fine if you prefer it, but it ain't better than Gone Girl. The book (Gone Girl) is superiror to Dark Places, let alone the script written by its author, directed by David Fincher etc. which gives the actors everything they need to give a critically acclaimed performance (which three of them did do.)

And what the *beep* does Theron's mom has to do anything with the adaptation? It's reasonable if she dedicated her performance to her or something but how does her mom's past make this movie better? Cuz that's what you're implying with your biased topic.

I'm a HUGE Theron fan but Gone Girl was 100 times better.

Gone Girl was better til the last 15 minutes when it went off the rails.

This movie is slightly better. Both are solid.
