Awful

Seriously, this is the worst movie I've seen in a looong time, and I watch a lot of movies.

Won't say it was the worst, but it wasn't very good.

I have not read the book, so I had no preconceived notions about story or casting.

All through the movie I kept saying that Charlize is miscast. I just felt it wasn't working for the story.

Come to find out, that in the novel the character is 4'10." Charlize just seemed the whole time to be more sullen than angry, but not mean while hiding her vulnerablility. And the reason: when someone is of a certain physical stature, they have to curb their anger or it will be met with aggression. Whereas a really mean, angry diminutive person can get away with it because people won't want to attack someone so small. And if that person is known for having gone through a tragedy well yeah, especially people will cut them breaks.

A lot of cliches in this film. And even the wonderful Charlize Theron could not make it better for me.

Beyond awful.

Son goes to jail for murders he didn't commit because why? To protect, some murderous bitch that killed his sister? Please.

Sister lies about her brother being a murderer ... because why?

Mother orders her own death. Insurance money is better than finding your mother murdered and your children childless.

I guess some people get off on mindless films or can just turn off what minds they may have and wade through this garbage.

Not me.

That was part of it. I think the other part was that he knew everyone was already convinced he did it - no matter how much he protested. And he was most likely going to jail over the Krissy situation anyway. (He was innocent on both accounts but because of who he was and his family history no one was inclined to believe him if he claimed his innocence)

In her mind it wasn't a lie. Ben was chasing her out of the house so she knew he was there. Then sitting in a hospital room immediately after witnessing a horrifying/tramatic event the police start questioning her and asking very leading questions.

It's quite comment for those conditions to create false memories.

Mother orders her own death. Insurance money is better than finding your mother murdered and your children childless.

To start, I want to be clear that I'm not making excuses for her but she was in crippling debt and severely depressed. And (especially after the Krissy incident) she felt that her kids would have a better chance of leading a productive life if they were raised by their aunt - away from her debt/depression and away from Runner. She thinks she's a failure as a mother and the only thing she can do to help her family is to make sure they had at least a little bit of money.

The murder was arranged to look like a botched robbery and she was only supposed to be stabbed once where she would bleed out quickly and it would make no noise. Yes her kids would wake up to see that but it wasn't supposed to be as gruesome as it turned out.

The book, while pretty far fetched at the end, manages to tie things up better and explain why people did the things they did. That was one of the big faults I found with this movie.

Nice breakdown.

I like how some posters state, "I guess some people get off on mindless films or can just turn off what minds they may have and wade through this garbage."

I guess some people need to actually analyze a film and actually use their brains to see that there is an explanation for certain events instead of just thinking they are the experts on cinema.

This is the dumbest post ever.

There's something wrong with Esther.

3/10....I LOST my time....

I give it a 4 out of 10. Usually, I can connect with something in a movie, but I couldn't buy anything in this one. The acting didn't have any meat to it. The pacing was chaotic. Motivations for the main characters were not flushed out. I would put the blame on the director.

Did not do the book justice. Badly executed. I wouldn't say it was completely awful but i wouldn't watch again nor would i recommend it.

At best a 5/10 movie
