Question?

Is it normal in the US that your are kept in a prison with convicted criminals, before you are convicted?

reply

I think it depends on a variety of things. The nature of the crime, if the person is a "flight risk", or if they have any prior convictions, if they have money for bail, etc.

To me it made absolutely no sense... Unless you want to f*** someones life up... I understand that he looked guilty... but still you have to be convicted before be placed together with hardcore criminals... or is it just me?

reply

In the US that depends on the severity of the crime, or the color of your skin.

Nope. Naz was being held with other accused men waiting for their trials. Technically, it was a remand center, not a prison per se. A lot of them would have had previous convictions, but for many it would have been their first time behind bars. If convicted, Naz would have been transferred to an actual prison.

Freddy was a convict (already serving a murder sentence) but was brought back to Rikers Island to face a new murder charge. There might also have been a few convicts there who were appealing their sentences.
