how can u *beep* yourself??

when John dated Jane, how can you want to have sex with a younger version of yourself??? Its like the opposite of exciting!

reply

Easy - both want exactly the same things. I'm sure Jane would behave in a manner that would also excite John because everyone has their little quirks when it comes to sex, and theirs is absolutely aligned.

People do enjoy sex with the same partner over their lifetimes, so it's hardly a revelation.

reply

Speak for yourself, likely you're so unsexy noone would have sex with a younger version of yourself.

reply

Well, I think it was a part of himself that he had lost, quite literally. In a sort of poetic sense, I think he was rather in love with the lost female inside him. When you think about it, what better person to be with than yourself? Who is more like you? Who would like all the same things you do? Who would know all your quirks and interests and needs? I think it would be strange though, to be physically attracted to yourself enough in order to be physically intimate... so you have a point there.

My question is this: wouldn't there be an awfully high risk of genetic deformation (other than the obvious) in conceiving with yourself or whatnot considering that not only are you related to this person, but you ARE this person? In other words just like with inbreeders, there would be too much similar generic material for there to be a healthy birth. it wouldn't be a clone, because that only requires one set of genetic material and this would be two sets of the same. That, and it creates and mind numbing paradox. js

reply

Inbreeding only increases the likelihood of defects. The reason is that we all carry around defective traits or genes, but because they are recessive and not dominant, they usually don't get expressed. Most genetic disorders are simply a bad roll of the dice where two people's recessive disease gets expressed.

Inbreeding increases the likelihood, because closely related people will have many of the exact same recessive genes. That increases the odds of a baby getting smacked in the face with carious recessive genetic diseases and deformities.

It is the reason many purebred pets and animals have health problems. Most pedigree animals were inbred to make them into what they are. Technically, Mutts are far healthier from an evolutionary point of view.

With all the said, I sure as *beep* wouldn't want to *beep* a female version of me. I am an ogre. I would make a horrendous girl.

This is a misperception: it *is* a clone. The mother and father have identical DNA. As always, half the mother's DNA is combined with half the father's DNA. That makes one set of DNA, not two sets. That's how human reproduction works.

In this case, half of something plus the corresponding half of the exact same thing makes... a perfect copy of the original thing.

(Mitochondrial DNA just comes from the mother, so there's no problem there).

reply

Yea but what about recombination? I'm a little rusty but wouldn't the gametes(sperm and egg) each consist of different combinations of the strands the bartender inherited from his mother and father due to recombination in meiosis during gamete formation.

reply

Yes, because of recombination, even if a hermaphrodite were able to self-fertilize (equivalent to Jane and John conceiving), they will never be able to give birth to a perfect clone of themselves.

Imagine the DNA of each parent to be:

1A
2B
3C
4D
5E....

Due to meiosis, the DNA of the resulting embryo could look something like

AA
2B
C3
4D
55...

reply

But couldn't the resulting DNA of the embryo also look like this?

1A
2B
3C
4D
5E....

There's a chance, right? Or do you suggest such a result is flat out impossible?

Even if it's highly improbable, it only has to happen once.

reply

Infinitesimally small chance. Practically zero. Equivalent to shuffling 2 decks of millions of cards, dealing them out and getting the 2 original decks in the correct order. I suppose it is still possible but the movie sure didn't present it like it was some kind of a miracle.

reply

As long as it's a non-zero chance, that's all that's needed for it to work. Novikov's self-consistency principle weeds out timelines with zero chances, but leave the rest, no matter how improbable.

reply

you forgot the part where he is also his own father and his own mother.

reply

Well, there's one thing you have to consider above everything else. John/Jane was a hermaphrodite. This is not something most people can identify or cope with. There's that bond of feeling like they don't belong.

So you've never "self-loved" yourself?

reply

Seriously, I'd love to have an affair with my-self, in both genders. Not even joking.

Someone isn't a narcissist...
Right...

If you have a person that loves exactly what you love, thinks exactly as you do, and understand your deepest desires. Why not?
