Age of Ultron is actually a good movie. What did penalized this movie?

I think thats are some elements that penalized this movie:

1- Its collocation: Age of Ultron was announced in 2013,and at the time everyone had hype about this movie. Then,in 2014,Marvel Studios announced Civil War...and everyone's hype went all towards that movie! I remember that the same day that Civil War was announced, the memes about it immediately went viral. So,before it had the chance to come out,Age of Ultron became from the 'Mega-awesome Avengers sequel' to 'Just a filler episode before the REAL fight between Cap and Tony that will happen in Civil War'. That movie was downgraded by Civil War before it even came out. Marvel Studios should have announced the title after the release of Age of Ultron.

2- The early days of cancel culture: Joss Whedon's line about Natasha feeling a monster because she cant have children...well,it was (purposefuly) misunderstood by some people. This caused a pointless controversy, because its pretty clear that what Whedon meant was that Natasha felt more like a killing machine than a human being, the part about the children was only a part of her speech about feeling not human. But okay. Some people just wanted to bash Joss.

3- Marvel Studios meddling more than ever: They always meddle, but this time, maybe because Whedon's ideas about the movie and the studio's ideas about the movie were too much different, they created a giant mess! They cut a lot, especially scenes with Thor and Loki, and other scenes.

Thats some of the reasons why this movie made less money than the first one,and it was less loved by critics. I think the main one is the first one by the way. Taking away hype from the sequel of your Avengers movie was a big mistake made by Marvel Studios.

Bingo! (About the first element that penalized the movie)

Ultron ruined this movie. He should have been more cold and sinister. A few line changes and a complete ADR voiceover would completely change the tone.

Another reason is this: In the same period the movie came out, also the Daredevil tv show came out! And i remember that, when it came out, everyone loved it and they praised Marvel for them doing a different project from the others, more realistic, etc. so everyone fell in love with that new style of Marvel, and they kinda snubbed Age of Ultron also for that reason. Its incredible by the way to notice how everyone was in love with the Marvel/Netflix shows around 2015,and then,a few years later, around 2018,nobody was talking about them anymore, one of the reason why they got canceled. Nowadays people still love the Daredevil tv show, but never talks about the other Marvel shows that were (and still can be find, altough they are canceled) on Netflix.

I agree with everything except the Loki scene. We didn’t need him in this movie.

I honestly think this film was a massive let down. It's not terrible but very disappointing.

Ultron was very underwhelming. His evil scheme I thought was clever and very menacing but Ultron himself lacked intimidation and tension to his character. He didn't come off very evil or scary as I wouldve liked him to be nor did I feel a sense of tension from his character.

The tone of this film should've been taken more seriously and gone in a more serious direction. I'm not saying the film should be bleak with lack of humor but the film was just way too lighthearted. The humor was childish, forced, and didn't work at all because it was shoehorned into scenes that couldve been more serious but the humor just deprived that away. It also just lacked dramatic moments and tension.

The film felt rushed and nothing much really happened as much as I would like. Certain scenarios and moments just happen like that with no build up or tension. And you also don't feel much dynamics between the avengers and ultron. He literally just shows up at the end of the first act and defeats the avengers, cap faces against him in the end of the second act, and then we have our typically climactic battle.

The film was just disappointing. Not terrible but just very underwhelming and thank God Infinity War and Endgame fixed these issues.

Why you didnt feel any tension? Because you already knew Cap and Iron Man would have fought each other in Civil War! Thats why! Infinity War and Endgame are mediocre movies, but you liked them more because when you watched them you didnt knew the future plot! Giving spoilers to the audience before Age of Ultron was a mistake made by Marvel Studios

That's not really the reason why I didn't feel any tension. Im basing my opinion on this film itself and not setting up future installments. The movie itself was just very tensionless because of the overall lighthearted tone of the film as well as the villain of Ultron himself. Not because I knew what will happen in future installments.

As for infinity war and endgame, I felt tension because you can actually feel how serious the stakes were in those films. Not because I didn't know where they were gonna go with the next installment. Thanos was actually a great villian who was interesting, intimidating, and not a jokester like Ultron. I actually felt the tension surrounding his character as well as the films itself.

I actually liked AoU a lot. While I still think the first Avengers is better directed, the story in AoU is more interesting and I think Ultron is an underrated MCU villain.

The trailer for this film was one of the darkest trailers ever put out by Marvel, and the film did not match the trailer. However, I still love this film.
