This is a great movie but isn't Winter Soldier still the best sequel?

Marvel has already delivered some great sequels (Iron Man 2 being the ugly step-child) but as good as Age of Ultron turned out isn't Winter Soldier still the better all around movie?

Winter Soldier had a lot to juggle but not as much or as many characters as Avengers. To me, this is what lands Age of Ultron below Winter Soldier. It looks like Whedon filmed more connective tissue but some of it hit the cutting room floor. We know what was cut from Winter Soldier and none of it effected character or story. Will we say that once we see Age of Ultron's cut scenes?

As it stands, Winter Solder felt more intense and more personal. Avengers is entertaining as can be but feels more broad.

I really enjoyed iron man 2, mainly because I did care for the first one.
Winter soldier was also solid

TWS has been hugely over hyped as some kind of deep political thriller.

I'll say the first Avengers is better than both TWS and AoU.

It was hyped as a political thriller. It is a political thriller. There's a lot of politics behind Pierce's actions and Nick Fury's actions. This drives the plot.

It's a political thriller right up until we find out Robert Redford is 100% certified evil and the heroes can just attack him without guilt.

It's a good movie and I like it, but it jumps off the "political thriller" train at that point.

i genuinely do not understand the point you are making, perhaps you would like to expand on it?

Politics is about arguments. When you start with each side having an argument, that's political. When you reveal that one side simply must be physically destroyed, that's not political any longer because that side's arguments are now irrelevant.

A good example is the movie "The 6th Day." Before the action scenes start, the villain, who is really into cloning, makes some arguments about how anti-cloning laws should be loosened. In the world of the movie, it's a hot political issue.

Then we find out that he's cloned Arnold Schwarzenegger without permission; he maintains a death squad that's trying to kill one of the Arnolds; he uses illegal cloning to bring back his death-squad guys when they die; and the solution to these problems is for the Arnolds to attack his HQ and kill him.

At that point, the political arguments from the first act are a dead letter. The villain could have spent that time talking about his favorite restaurant for all the difference it would make in the big action finale. It's no longer about whether cloning is right or wrong; it's about the clear need to kill this guy.

Likewise, the instant we find out Robert Redford wants to send out Helicarriers to crisscross the world murdering everyone on Hydra's kill list, and the solution is to go blow up those carriers, any political aspect of the movie just ceases to exist.

i don't think that argument quite holds water. it is the perspective of some people in this film that the insight project must be shut down, as they consider it to be a totalitarian terrorist attack. however, not everyone in the film feels that way. we, the viewers, are free to think what we like. indeed, there have been threads on the winter soldier site expressing sympathy for pierce's objective.

i don't think widow or fury had any intention of killing pierce until he posed a direct and immediate threat to the people in the same room with him.

What exactly did you want from this? For Hydra and SHIELD to play political chess and have another cold war until one of them finally fell? 

I like it as long as I don't have to hear it being compared to a '70s political thriller.

Yes to TWS being the best sequel so far IMO. Good action, acting, plot. It felt like a "thriller" in some ways. IMO

Cap 2 is the best MCU movie period in my book. It's also in my #1 spot for comic book movies in general. (tied with 3 other movies)

I wouldn't change a frame in Cap 2....perfection.

That's the absolute truth and why I love the fact that the Russos are taking over Avengers. Yes, Joss did a superb job but he's taken it as far as he could.
