Everybody seems to miss the fact that..

Spoilers:
They never left the influence of the mirror. After the dad dies in the 'past' events the daughter makes a promise with the son to come back and "kill it". She spends a great deal of effort to track the mirror so she can go back to it.

Notice how in all the examples she gave about the mirror, the mirror always won (including the guy running into traffic). After the dad dies, there are till 2 survivors. The police would be there any minute because several shots were fired. The mirror still had a job to finish, and it made Kaylie come back so it could finish the job.

Although I agree this is not a masterpeice by far, there are no plotholes. THey did not stand a chance, the power of the mirror is practically unlimited. If you think that fact is a reason to dislike the movie, then I understand completely. But don't come saying about how bad the decisions of the characters are.

Also, I thought the cinematography, acting, directing, etc was worth atleast a 6. Maybe not a movie I would recommend, but sometimes I'm not in the mood for a 4 hour masterpiece, sometimes I just want an entertaining 105min and this gave it to me.

I have a slightly different take over the mirror's intent. The brother was the only one who successfully damaged it after it cracked when he shot his dad. I feel like it never intended to kill him, but to make him suffer as payback. The whole concept is great though. In reality mirrors show us our own world but never exactly how it is since everything is always flipped. Essentially they lie to us and make us see things incorrectly. There's also that very old superstition that mirrors actually show us our souls, and if we break them with our soul exposed then we are cursed with bad luck. The brother was locked up in a mental institution for his teenage years and let out to unwittingly kill his own sister and be locked up probably permantly for that also. Now that's what I call bad luck.

Yes, I like your concept of the mirror "flipping" things.

In the original short, the test dog's name was "Flip!"

I think it's close to being called a masterpiece. The direction, cinematography and acting are all fantastic. I gave it an 8.5. I know it's hard to compare a 100 minute, low-budget horror movie to Aliens, Terminator 2 or Scarface, but if you only look at what the film achieves and how, this is just great!

I think the Mirror did one more "flip:"

The very last shot shows Young Kaylie watching the cops and ambulance pull away.

That made me think that all the adult parts of the film were the kids' fantasies, fueled by their vow to return as adults to destroy the Mirror, and its ability to feed on those emotions and warp them.
