If you could change the course of history 15 years ago, who would be your choice as James Bond? I think the franchise's formula and the character himself transcends any actor as far as success is concerned Case in point, I thought Daniel Craig was a bad choice 15 years ago & his interpretation of the character has been stilted & bland yet the films were generally very successful anyway.
Personally I feel that Casino Royale was tailor made for Clive Owen and I'm still bitter that I'll never get to see him take over the role.
I wish Broccoli and Wilson had greenlit Tarantino's proposed R-Rated, Black & White, 1960s set version of Casino Royale with Pierce Brosnan as a standalone-farewell project for his tenure as Bond.
Brosnan was a great Bond but worked with mostly mediocre filmmakers and rushed productions just to meet release dates (he averaged one Bond film released every 21 months for his 4 films, Craig averages 1 Bond film released every 33.5 months for his 5 films).
Would you have settled for this? For the 50th anniversary year they release 2 Bond films. One with Craig and the other being Skyfall with Brosnan. As the story for Skyfall had indications that Bond was getting too old it would have been a great ending for the pre-Craig reboot era. Craig's film could have been more of a continuation of the CR/QoS stuff.
As I am running ideas here would you have thought it to be cool if the plot for Spectre was more about the Quantum group realizing that now that the world knows about them (from QoS) they need to get more of an "in house" security. Pre-QoS they could just hire people here and there and hide their tracks. Now they they are a known commodity (so to speak) so their secrecy does not matter anymore so they can then get their own spy group. So Spectre would have been the story of Quantum getting this group and it being lead by Blofeld.
The next film would have been Blofeld taking over Quantum from the inside. Mr. White could have then come to Bond not because his daughter was in danger but because he needed to stop Bloefeld.
Owen at one time seemed like a shoo-in for the role and I know many people just took it for granted that he would be the next Bond. I even thought he would be a good choice.
However, after seeing Craig, I am glad Daniel got it and think he's better suited for the role. Even my dad, who is pretty critical of every actor who has played Bond since Connery, thinks Craig is the best Bond since Sean and he's pretty disappointed that after this next film his tenure is over.
