Not Going Well So Far

NY POST – The 25th James Bond film just launched in Jamaica and there’s already trouble in paradise over the title and plot – however Page Six has learned that famed Bond villains Grace Jones and Christoph Waltz will return in cameo roles.

While Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris (Moneypenny) Ben Whishaw (Q) and Léa Seydoux (Madeleine Swann from Spectre) were formally announced on Thursday as returning for Daniel Craig’s swan song as 007, with Oscar winner Rami Malek newly signed as a villain – the movie has no title and no finalized script.

And rather like grumpy Craig himself (who famously said he’d rather “slash his wrists” than return as 007 after 2015’s insipid “Spectre”), Bond 25 opens with a retired 007 who appears to be just as unwilling to go back into her Majesty’s Secret Service, living in “his spiritual home” of Jamaica with Swann.

The source added of curmudgeonly Craig’s return, “Everyone on the production side detests working with Daniel, he’s so difficult and makes things impossible. But [Bond producer] Barbara Broccoli thinks he walks on water, and only her opinion matters.”

Sometimes shooting from the hip as you go along makes for a pretty interesting film. Unlike many I really liked Quantum and that's how they ended up shooting that. From the photos I saw, Craig is already looking a little too old. But both Connery and Moore stayed for one movie too many. I was thrilled to read that Felix is coming back. I think this movie is gonna be real crowded as they try to celebrate everybody and everything while attempting to give Bond the ultimate sendoff. I also think by this point that everybody involved has entered a mindset of it "screw it, let's just bang this picture out and be done with it." It's not possible to think otherwise after so many set backs and delays and creative shakeups. There reaches a point where even passion projects become pain in the ass chores.

Craig has turned out to be the worst Bond ever after a promising start. SPECTRE was supposed to be his last, now 25 is definitely supposed to be his last, but I can already see little hints being dropped in interviews that the door is still open for him to return. So in five years Craig will be back yet again in Bond 26 for some Christopher Nolan copycat dark and edgy shitfest.

Barbara Broccoli loves Craig. She said she would have him play Bond forever if she could. She would do everything possible to have him back for a 6th Bond film.

She absolutely would, and she would even be willing to wait 10+ years for him if necessary. I wouldn't expect these insane 5 year delays to be resolved anytime soon. Craig has already become way too old after only five films. He could have already pumped out five films by as early as 2016 if he followed the typical pattern of one film every two years, but he's a lazy entitled brat who wants to take his sweet time and make other crappy unsuccessful films while still expecting the Bond role to be waiting for him when its convenient for him.

I would be happy with every three years. We had four years between QOS and Skyfall, now five years between Spectre and Bond 25. I think every two years at this point is unrealistic. He could have probably scraped by in his 6th Bond film if it came out in 2021.

The five year gap is due to production rights I think, but I think a major part in the delay was Barbara waiting on Craig to make up his mind. This is way to long in between Bond films. The 6 year hiatus after License to Kill sucked, but at least it could be explained.

The delay between LTK and GE was because of legal disputes over the rights to the James Bond character which went all the way back to the disputes between Fleming and McClory over the Thunderball story. So that kind of delay is understandable. The entire series was in jeopardy.

In my eyes, there is no correlation between quality and quantity in this series. So I don't agree with common sentiment that waiting four or five years is worth it because the quality is likely to increase. I don't think that's the case at all, and in the case of Bond 25, they have literally been sitting on their asses for years doing nothing. They don't even have a script finished after multiple revisions and emergency re-writes and they've already started filming. It doesn't even seem like they started working on any script at all until around last year which is already quite a long time after SPECTRE was released.

So I would prefer a return to the release schedule that we saw in the Brosnan era where we had a new Bond film every two years on average. Brosnan made four films in just over seven years. Connery, Lazenby, and Moore combined were pumping out films nearly every year since the series started. And I don't see any benefit in waiting so long. Sometimes Bond films are instant classics, and other times they are atrocious. Just as an example, most people consider AVTAK to be the worst Bond film ever, and I agree it's pretty bad, but then TLD only two years later is my personal favourite and is generally recognized as a strong entry. So EON could have taken 5+ years off after the AVTAK disaster, but instead they just got back to work and created an instant classic in only two years. Craig wants to be emo and whine about slashing his wrists rather than working though.

More trouble today as filming has been cancelled because Daniel Craig has injured his ankle on set in Jamaica.
