I agree with the OP, but talking about race is what helps us deal with it and stop it. Ignoring it completely or not talking about it has NEVER made it go away, and it's ridiculous to think that it ever would. It's more realistic to deal with it head n.

shareAlthough, it totally depends on who's talking and why. People talk about racism all the time, many times for the wrong reasons. In an open forum, with more than one ethnicity present w/the goal being understanding (and not hiding behind anonymity like this but face to face), that sounds productive. Unfortunately most of the talk about racism happens between people who are just looking to reinforce their own narrow opinions and cheer each other's ignorance.

shareI read an article years ago (shortly after Hitch came out) that Will Smith is usually paired with a non-black female as the love interest in his films in order to broaden the films' appeal to the general audience - so the film won't be labeled a "black" movie. If that's true, then I guess it's ultimately about the bottom line.

Will Smith is good enough, both in looks and acting, to get the female movie-goers, and whatever good-looking woman he's paired with will get the male eyeballs.

I dont have a problem with interracial relationships.
Like if Michael B Jordan had a white love interest in Creed I think that would have been a good idea.
But in this film I just didnt believe they were a match, me and my girlfriend sat watching it thinking Margot Robbie was conning him during their first love affair and he was playing the sap to expose the con and con her back harder.
But as the film played out it was actually a romance.

Myself, I add a star to my rating of any movie which features an interracial relationship for no particular reason - just because why the fuck not. Especially if it's a black man and a white woman, because that seems to be the one that racists find the most objectionable.
Anyway, this was a fun movie, and they totally had chemistry.
The real problem with this interracial relationship is that it was a total miscast, it was also a big reason the movie bombed.
You don't cast someone only hot and not cute like Margot for the female character if you want to appeal to the female demographic, and Will Smith, Idris Elba or Brad Pitt is not, women never lost their heads with him.
And for the male demographic you already handicap yourself if the movie is about a romance, and in the top of that you add an interracial relationship with a blue eyes 20-30 years-old super hot blonde? with a black guy 20 years older? They got the racist reactions they wanted with the free advertisement in mainstream media, and a bigger lost in the box office, congratulations. Most people mating preference is their own race, if the movie doesn't need explicitly an interracial relationship like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" you are shooting your own foot, because you are not making your movie more appealing to general audiences, deal with it.

The movie was actually a modest hit, because it was that good, and because Will Smith being in a film is guaranteed box-office opener (that don't call when his movies open the "Big Willie Weekend" for nothing) that's why it was promoted so heavily (in my area, anyway.) When I saw the trailer, I knew right away I was going to like the film, and I wasn't disappointed at all---I thought it was real good fun and a good date movie. Also, Smith dosen't look like he's aged at all in the past 20 years, so quit harping on that. And all the three of the male stars you mentioned have major followings and are very popular, so you really don't know what you're talking about there. You can ramble all you want with your stupid racist ramblings, but everybody didn't hate this film or have a problem with an interracial couple just because YOU did. Get over yourself. No, you racists are the most obnoxious because you think everyone who isn't white has to bow down and kiss your asses simply because you're white. Go fck yourself with that BS. And btw, interracial couples are the norm now. Maybe they aren't in your little narrow-minded boring a** world, but they sure as hell are in mine.
