So incredibly rushed.

I can't be the only one who feels this way, right?

Every "big" moment between Ellis and Tony felt so rushed and left me nothing to chew on. I know this is 1952 but even still, I feel like we barely got to see them at all. I left the theater feeling like I didn't even KNOW their relationship. I saw two people in love, and i knew they were in love. But I didn't feel like I knew HOW they fell in love or WHY. It just didn't work as a romance for me.

And then, the second half is even WORSE. I mean, Ellis, you've been on what, 4 "dates" with Jim and all of a sudden you're conflicted about Tony? Is that all it took back then? Christ.

Didn't feel the film was rushed at all. Just an absolute beautiful gem of a movie. I saw it 3 times and will probably see it a couple more times.

I agree, avtiger. The pacing was perfect. The film very true to Toibin's beautifully understated novel.

Sounds to me like your conflicted about the story beeing told. This is NOT a romance. Her love for Tony is only 1 aspect of the story. Its about breaking up and starting over. The focus is all on Ellie were the love theme takes a back seat to the big picture. Just look at the Poster.. It's a girl on a boat going somewere. Had it been a love story or romance the poster would have been on Ellie and Tony together.

Absolutely agree. Every big moment was not earnt at all.

One of the biggest dissapointments of 2015 for me. Was expecting a lot more with all the praise it got.

It was rushed from the start. We're only briefly introduced to the main character when we're already supposed to be sad about her leaving her family behind and going to America... Way too many emotional climaxes stuffed into 2 hours for them to have any effect, I feel.

A lot of major scenes were cut or glossed over. And it moved so fast sometimes yes, still a good movie tho.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

I greatly admired the pacing. I love the exposition was shown, as opposed to explained. I like how growing love between the two actors was demonstrated by those actors, as opposed to fed to us.

So many films clock in with bloated running times due to tedious exposition, meet cutes, random relationship tension and multiple endings. This movie is exceptional because it eschewed that crap.

interestingly - I went with 2 friends to see it- 1 thought it was slow, one thought it was about right and I felt it was a little slow then a little rushed once the return to Ireland started but it maintained the tension that way.
it was a story, about emotions, about how young emotions are muddled easily - I too thought that she might have tried to stay with Jim if it hadn't been for the interfering vitriolic Kelly woman
I enjoyed it very much - more than the other ones I've see that are nominated for Best Film

I think the interfering woman just shook her up in a hurry and forced her to realize what she was giving up in America. But I think she was on the way to realizing it anyway. She couldn't get a word in edgewise at work, with the neighbors who expected her to live a certain way, with her mother who made her feel guilty so she would stay. I think if the Kelly woman didn't push her, she would have come to the realization on her own..

It was just IMO easier to stay with the familiar so I can see why she was getting caught up in the ease of it. And for anyone who ever moves away, you always have some torn feelings. But I am convinced she would have gone to America. She became more independent than her life in Brooklyn that Ireland could ever have provided for her.

Agree with you 100%. Ill think this was a crappy movie.
