** SPOILERS ** Will Definitely Lose Viewers re:plot decision about Vane

1 - Charles Vane is arguable the most sexualised of the male characters, making him attractive to many female and male viewers.

2 - He also has the only real M/F passionate love/hate relationship (with Eleanor) on the show, which viewers also love, and which can keep a series in production for years.

3 - Add to this the fact that Zach MacGowan himself has a very sexual image, and is arguably the most attractive of the male actors.

I hope that it was Zach MacGowans decision to leave Black Sails, otherwise the Producers have made a terrible decision.

I really loved Vane but there are other good characters. I am not the least bit concerned that they will have trouble moving on from him. Maybe his story was simply finished. Oh, and while I definitely found him attractive, I think there are equally, if not more, attractive characters still around. Attraction is a very subjective thing so I think it is hard to make the case that any particular character is the most attractive. Eye of the beholder and all.

Zach was great but no, I wont be quitting because Vane got necked. And yes he did want off the show. It's been discussed at length here and other social media. 7 months a year away from his young family when he thought Vane would get snuffed first season got too much.

If people want to quit a show simply because an actor who is attractive got necked, that's their problem. Seems rather shallow.

I for one, will keep watching. Vane dying like he did was actually good for the show, it brought more story and a reason for the island to revolt against the english pricks.

My only consern is that Elinore will continue to breathe and sceme, but i am hoping Black Beard gives her to his crew to rape and molest until she's ready to be tossed to the sharks.

One can only hope...

I would love to see Blackbeard get hold of Eleanor, but I think it's far more likely she will outlive them all and the last scene of the series will be her looking out, thoroughly satisfied, at her little kingdom in the Bahamas.

That's horrible. And you might get people feeling sorry for Eleanor at that point.

More likely she'll win. I think the writers love her more than the audience does.

The fact that numerous "men" and some women hate every female character on the show and want to see Eleanor raped and killed proves that they are sick in the head. And that's exactly why she needs to live. She's a terrific character that inspires such a fervent reaction because she's not a sweet little house wife, and she doesn't need to be. Historically we know that Woodes Rogers lived to fight another day, and he eventually tamed Nassau. Why can't Eleanor do something with her life? She's a fighter. It would really be a shame if they had Eleanor come all this way just to be killed. That's just another way of saying "this is what women deserve." Abuse, sexual violence, and murder is the punishment for women who try to be equal with men or compete with men.

Such as the fire fighter and EMT who was driven to suicide from the abuse and torment she suffered from her male colleagues. Or the feminist college student that was strangled by a former member of the rugby team for launching a campaign against the school's rugby team... because those men were making numerous threats that made women feel unsafe on campus. Gee.

Regarding the interviews, the actor knew the character had an ending and was prepared not to see the series through to its conclusion. He never said he wanted out, implying he asked to be killed off. Any actor would covet the opportunity for increased exposure to the industry's movers and shakers as well as to build a larger fan base.

We spent a lot of time down in South Africa shooting, and I have small kids, so there was also an aspect of me not wanting to spend seven months a year down in South Africa. So partially too, I was maybe pitching it a little β€” β€œWhen are we going to do it?”

OT holy crap I had no idea he had never ridden before. What a maniac. I love him!

We always said it’s a tragedy no matter what β€” trying to get people to love pirates and root for them to win a war that they didn’t win. The pirates did not maintain control of the Bahamas for very long.

Spoiler alert?

All good observations but I'm not sure Vane's fan that are disgruntled are THAT many to hurt the show.

Personally I am glad he is gone, I hated that 'Batman' voice, I rarely could understand what he is saying.

Killing off a major characters can help a story line, just look at Game of Thrones. Vane should have died when he took over the fort, he is the one that screwed everything up.

Nest up, kill off Flint...

Not sure about all that, but Eleanor is the only character whose fate we don't know or can't guess.

It's not a terrible decision at all. Vane was one of my favorite characters on the show but his death is a monumental scene that will go down in the shows history. These characters can't last forever, historically he was hung by the British in Jamaica, this isn't a "happy ever after" story or Pirates Of The Caribbean, most of these characters we have grown to love will die at some point in the story, that is after all what happened to them in reality. This is a prequel to Treasure Island, and I wouldn't be surprised if one or more will fall in season 4. Probably Rackham and Blackbeard.

Flint almost makes it to the end though.

Show should end with Flint dying of consumption in Savannah, and Billy walking up the road towards the Admiral Benbow inn...

reply

I think it should end with Flint emerging from the trees after he buried the treasure and killed his men.

I think he's attractive, but he kind of has a bit of a Doberman face? Personally, I think Flint is sex on legs. He's ridiculously manly and hot. Way more my type than Vane (whom I can see why some people find attractive, he just doesn't do it for me).

I was never able to get into Vane X Eleanor. I enjoyed their back and forth and the passion, but I never shipped them together. It was obvious he felt more for her than she did for him. Vane let himself get played and I don't find her manipulation worth rooting for. Jack X Anne is the m/f ship I'm more into.

I don't think Zach chose to leave the show, but I don't think he was fired. The writers seem to be doing a fairly good job of sticking (at least loosely) to the timeline and events of when/how these pirates died. Vane burned bright and hard but he was only a pirate King for a short while before he was hanged. If you read the wiki entry on the real Charles Vane, it's very similar to what happened on the show. I think it was just Vanes time to die.

Look, I'm going to miss Zach and I very much enjoyed his character, but for none of the reasons you listed. I loved Vane bc he turned out to be a man of principles. I enjoyed his friendships with Flint and Jack, his father/son thing with Blackbeard and that he had a really great character arc that inevitably led to redemption.
