This or Vikings?
I've been looking for a new show to watch, and I think I've narrowed it down to black sails or Vikings, anybody have a recommendation which one I should do first, or any other shows along these lines?

shareBLACK SAILS.
It has cannon (artillery) and flintlocks in addition to edged weapons.
Send her to the snakes!
I love both shows equally. I feel that they both have weaker episodes on occasion, however I'll admit that it is more common with Vikings. Also, I disagree that Vikings went down after S2. I think it became stronger.
What I don't understand is why these 2 fantastic shows receive so little love at awards time. They are far and away better shows and with better actors than The Good Wife, Friday Night Lights, Homeland, and The Americans.
They are far and away better shows [with better actors than] The Americans
I love both shows. can't split them..
My suggestion would've been for you to watch both...
I tried watching Black Sails, but became disinterested after episode 4 or 5.
I love Vikings, I think it's even better than Game of Thrones (don't get me wrong, Game of Thrones is freeking epic and I will always love that show to, just my personal opinion).
I will try Black Sails again tho, probably in the summer when nothing else is on.
Get passed the first season. I don't know who is responsible for the jump in quality but I've never seen a show turn it around so quickly (except maybe parks and rec). The very end of season 1 is great and then it becomes excellent from episode 5 of season 2 and on.
shareIronically, I had the same problem. I tried to hang in there but Black Sails just bored me. Vikings on the other hand is fantastic. I also think it's better than GoT. Quite bloody and pagan this season, oh joy! Can they give Floki his own spinoff, please? Cannot wait to see what Jonathan Rhys Myers will bring to the show. He's slated for 20 freakin' episodes!
shareLol! I agree with everything you said! I just love Floki's mischievous laugh!
shareIdk, Floki in Iceland was so slow and boring.
What made the show exciting was Ragnar.
Black Sails started out very slow unlike Vikings, but picks up considerably by season 3.
shareI watch both, as well as the Last Kingdom. They're ALL worth watching!
Hot guys + dark subject matter + plenty of violence = watchable television.

Is he in 100? I've not seen that one. I'll have to check it out!

I like Vikings
I like Black Sails, too both, a lot... but BEST by far in this genre is:
Spartacus- hands down. No question. Period.
I rewatched Spartacus a couple months ago, the whole series. LOVE that series! Did you watch Rome? Almost as good.
Hot guys + dark subject matter + plenty of violence = watchable television.
Rome was great. I wish they didn't have to rush three seasons of material into one though.
There's a bit of a Rome reunion on Star Wars Rebels right now. Both Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson are voicing characters now. Enemies, but still.
The Emperor has no clothes.
I should rewatch Rome, it's been a while. I really like Ray Stevenson.
Hot guys + dark subject matter + plenty of violence = watchable television.
Rome almost as good as Spartacus? Spartacus is soft porn - crass, cheap, and tacky. How can you compare or even think it's better than Rome?
shareCan't even finish the first episode of Spartacus.
shareVikings. Definitely.
shareOut of the two shows, i'd have to go with Black Sails.
I've not seen all 4 seasons to the Vikings. I've seen 1 and 2, parts of 3 and thats it. I have to be in the mood for it though. Black Sails however i was able to watch without needing to be in the right mood. I simply loved it, the props, the characters, the story and so on. Also, its different and i don't recall any other show that surrounds itself with Pirates. Each season got better and the last episode to season 3 made me feel like it had its own little D-Day.
Vikings, although its ok started slowly and to be honest, we have enough shows that are more or less like it that doesn't have gun powder in it. But other than that, Black Sails is better for me
