I HATE THE THEME/INTRO SONG
Anyone else actually listen or watch that intro...i mute and fast forward quick
"THE ANIMAL...THE ANIMAL...BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH"
Volume is like 10% louder on that song than the show

I skip that part because I don't like the theme song either.
shareIt's one of my favorite opening songs ever. Immediately gets me pumped up. If I'm doing a marathon run of 5 or 6 episodes in a row, just when I'm lagging, that theme song is like an adrenaline rush to watch the next episode. (The end credits music choices are also phenomenal.)
The only time the theme song felt REALLY jarring was going into the final episode this season. After the super-dark ending of episode 12, the theme song felt really inappropriate. They probably should have dropped it from that one.
It's a dreadful song, sung by an annoying voice, set to a montage of disgusting closeups of faces. It's like somebody intentionally set out to create the most god-awful opening sequence ever.
shareThe close ups are faces of women who served time. Some of whine served with the real Piper. And I believe Piper Kierman(sp) is among the faces in the montage. IOW The faces are of real women prisoners. Whether you find them attractive or not is of no real consequence.
shareWhen I first started watching, I thought the faces were of the characters. There's one that looks like Red and another that looks like Yoga Jones (which, iirc, is the real Piper, she's near the end, the one who blinks). When I couldn't match the other faces, I thought maybe they were extras in the show. So I started looking for their faces while watching. Still couldn't match them so I googled and found out they were real inmates. ;-)
shareI think disgusting is a little harsh.... But it's certainly true that we are trained to appreciate the exact opposite in a closeup. We expect smooth, clear skin and artistically applied, "invisible" style makeup.
They're giving us the opposite. Yes, a lot of the skin there is uncared for and covered with warts, acne, bumps and lesions. The eyelashes are spiky and stuck together and the eyeliner is jagged.
I think that makes an excellent point, about how prisoners ARE "the animal", by showing how something we assume is so basic, really isn't. Being able to handle your skin the way you want, is a luxury.
It also provides a stark contrast to Piper's Hollywood good looks and bright white teeth, since she is usually one of the first things we see in earlier seasons.
Ultimately, no, this isn't an intro I want to watch while eating pecan pie.... But it feels appropriate. From the lyrics, to the shots used. And I think the viewpoint of "disgusting" is pretty harsh/overly contrived. I see some pretty troubled skin/makeup in the real world, too. Not every woman has beautiful clear skin. It doesn't mean they are disgusting people.
